Just like the Grinch, I have a wonderful, awful idea, and I need all of you to help.

Here's my elevator pitch: Random Planeswalker's Guide Generator.

So here's where I need help:
I need people to come up with small excerpts that could be found in a planeswalker's guide. Short descriptions of a race, a faction, a religion, a region -- whatever you want, as long as it's not a whole guide.

So, I invite you all to pick a concept and run with it alone. What can you come up with? Dragon servants? A shapeshifter academy? Unicorn mounts? Everything's up for grabs.

ooooo

So ok, how much of the old generator is now separated off into separate individual generators that we could call from here? I feel like that would influence how we build this.

I think one of the first things we should do for it is to examine what kind of archetypes we can tap.
Things like templar, femme fatale, etc etc.

  1. The plane generator that Raven and I helped Arcades build
  2. Our character roster
  3. Canon planes
  4. M:EM planes
  5. MtG creatures (which is still capable of calling a Zombie Zombie)

So, I decided to start my own thing, based on a thing I have been thinking of lately and using one of my leading phrases from the OP:
Quote:
The Abandoned Countryside
A large section of the southern country [placeholder name] is uninhabited due to recent history. Around 20 years ago, a group of powerful mages created a spellcircle which covered an unimaginable portion of the country. Their goal was to hold the populace for ransom, but one of the mages, gone mad with power, activated the spellcircle, transmogrifying every soul within the circle into a dragon. The spell was supposed to make those within loyal to the mages, but alone against a flight of strong-willed dragons, the one who activated the circle found themselves quickly devoured. The thousands of newly-created dragons soon took up their own paths, leaving the country for less crowded skies, though not before becoming overcome by the fires which now raged within them.

Now the once-idyllic southern countryside is marred by the charred remains of hundreds of fallen dragons, most resting where the populated cities and towns once stood, now little more than ashes and memories. The area within the spellcircle has been completely abandoned, and is avoided for fear that the spell is still active.

Would all the things be that complex and lengthy?

Not necessarily, but my original concept was to just create a bunch of vague and unconnected excerpts to recombine in random ways.

I suggest looking at the format of my (incomplete) Planeswalker's Guide to Solphos for reference. Each region is given one paragraph describing its culture, one paragraph describing its look at feel, and several bullet points for places of interest. You could do something similar for factions and important personages of the plane.

This quite requires a good amount of coordination, though. You can't just expect people to randomly post excerpts and make a coherent world out of it.

I might write something in the future, but for now I've got this for advice: Maybe go over the Oceanic Bubbles and see what you can make of that.

@Heliosphoros: The random plot generator is mostly for fun, but it can give inspiration. This would be similar.

@ CKY:
I really need to read your things, period, and it looks like you put a lot of work into the Solphos guide (said from a quick glance). What you say about small descriptions and bullet points sounds really good.

Thing is, it's not supposed to be a coherent world. This is not a community-driven "we make the plane" here, this is an attempt to plug in a lot of small excerpts into a dice-roller program that will recombine those excerpts in random ways. Maybe there will be a few planes which will materialize out of this experiment, but there is no guarantee -- especially since the random generator doesn't support "if>then" clauses. Chances are we'll get stupid results like "this is the :r: area: in it, you'll find plenty of swamps and :w: angels", but it will be fun above all.

How did I not think of that? Thanks for that. d('u'd)
