So, I brought up the idea a while ago for a thread dedicated to just gathering up evocative quotes from... well, wherever, I guess. I mean, the few I already have in mind range from real people to movies to anime to fanfiction, so I guess you can get them from anywhere. I suppose I'll start us off on this whacky ride: "That means you believed in the world, and so, the world kindly answered you belief." ~ Holland - Eureka 7 episode 2. |

This one is less a quote than a verse, but it's always been one of my favorites, and it's something I try to live by, when I'm able. It's an excerpt from "Ye Wearie Wayfarer" by Adam Lindsay Gordon. Adam Lindsay Gordon wrote: "Life is mostly froth and bubble,
Two things stand like stone, Kindness in another's trouble, Courage in your own." |

"Do not be afraid of perfection, you will never reach it." "Don't take drugs, take me! I am drugs!" - Salvador Dali “Sometimes, making the wrong choice is better than making no choice. You have the courage to go forward, that is rare. A person who stands at the fork, unable to pick, will never get anywhere.” “Love is not about what you want. It's about finding happiness for the one you love.” ― Terry Goodkind, Wizard's First Rule |

"The skin is faster than the word." -Brian Massumi, from an essay on affect, emotion, and language. I'm actually unpacking and problematizing the idea expressed here for my thesis but the phrase is so evocative... |

Just one of many from The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce - to which I am sure I will return on many occasions. Quote: Alone, adj. In bad company.

Sadly, I did not. But there's a lot of stuff in there which I expect she would like. For example: Quote: RESPECTABILITY, n. The offspring of a liaison between a bald head and a bank account.

"Let us not measure our sorrow by their worth, for then it will have no end." ~ Shakespeare? (I originally heard it in relation to the 9/11 World Trade Center memorial) |

WotW got me thinking about morality today, which reminded me of this passage from C.S. Lewis: Quote: The greatest evil is not now done in those sordid "dens of crime" that Dickens loved to paint. It is not done even in concentration camps and labour camps. In those we see its final result. But it is conceived and ordered (moved, seconded, carried, and minuted) in clean, carpeted, warmed, and well-lighted offices, by quiet men with white collars and cut fingernails and smooth-shaven cheeks who do not need to raise their voice.

C. S. Lewis The Screwtape Letters That sounds a lot like what's already going on in Jakkard. Although, given what we've seen of Jakkard, I would guess that although they don't need to raise their voice, they might do so anyway just because they enjoy to do so. |

RavenoftheBlack wrote: "I'll die before I surrender, Tim." - A general Originally, I was thinking to call you out on the clichéd nature of the quote, but then I read the line again and realized that it does bring a distinct feeling in me of wanting to know who is this general, of what war he's fighting in, why he's being so informal to whomever he's speaking to, etc., etc.. And on that note, I heard this from Extra History today and really found it really intriguing and easy to substitute the real-world names for fantastical ones: Quote: Am glad you are back. In this serious moment, I appeal to you to help me. An ignoble war has been declared to a weak country. The indignation in Russia shared fully by me is enormous. I foresee that very soon I shall be overwhelmed by the pressure forced upon me and be forced to take extreme measures which will lead to war. To try and avoid such a calamity as a European war I beg you in the name of our old friendship to do what you can to stop your allies from going too far. A pun does not commonly justify a blow in return. But if a blow were given for such cause, and death ensued, the jury would be judges both of the facts and of the pun, and might, if the latter were of an aggravated character, return a verdict of justifiable homicide. Lord LunaEquie is me wrote: Are you trying to get someone to canonically kill of Raven? Absolutely not! First off, Raven's puns are all beyond reproach. No right-minded jury would attempt to pun-ish him for them. Second off, in a fight between Raven and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., my money is squarely on Raven. To begin with, he has the major advantage of not being dead, which Mr. Holmes cannot claim. |
