Well, hello there, internet neighbors!

I am tickled pink (or tickled red, as the case may be) to offer you a new Jackie DeCoeur story, titled "The Sincerest Form of Flattery." This story takes place after the events depicted in Ruwin's "A Moral Compass," so, if you haven't yet read his fine work, I would suggest taking a gander over there first.

I would be remiss if I did not extend my thanks (yet again!) to Ruwin, whose input on the piece has been as invaluable as ever. He has all these cool toys in his sandbox, and, for reasons which remain a mystery to me, he continues to allow me to play with them. And, for that, I am deeply grateful.

As ever, your thoughts, comments, and criticisms are eagerly welcomed. It is my great hope that you will find something here which you enjoy.

The Sincerest Form of Flattery

Yoooooooo I am on the edge of my seat with these stories and I can't wait for the next one o_o

Between this and War of the Wheel I've got more cool serial fiction to tune into every week than I have in a while, and I'm more invested in this than most of the tv shows I'm watching... or the comics I'm reading for my thesis, for that matter.

I'm so glad you're enjoying them!

I wish I could promise anything resembling Raven's regularly scheduled delivery of content, but... that would be a lie.

Now you're going to make me feel really bad when I inevitably miss a week somewhere down the line...

As for this story, I really enjoyed it. I caught two things that struck me as a little off. The first was referring to the glass as "half-drunk" which, while technically correct, reads oddly to me. The second was this sentence: "I need to you try to..." instead of "I need you to try to..." Other than that, excellent.

You know, it's funny. I had an idea about a Jackie story and a new 'walker of mine a while back, and the beginning of that story was amazingly close to what you did here. Like, crazily close. Right down to the flowers for Trotter. But, I never got around to developing it, and so there it goes. Needless to say, therefore, that I love this set-up.

I really like the inter-play between Jackie and Lucy here, too. I find it pretty ironic that Jackie apparently has demonic heritage and red eyes, but Lucy, a full-blood demon, has black. Odd thing, that. :D

So yeah, very good work, and like Keeper, I'm pumped for the further developments with this story. I have certain suspicions, but it'll be interesting to see how all this unfolds when you and Ruwin really shift into gear.

Raven, I'm fairly sure that you could post nothing but dirty limericks until Thanksgiving, and you'd still be a model of reliability compared to yours truly. :)

Anyway, I am so glad that you enjoyed the story!

Well, I'll be darned. It always amazes me how people can independently converge on these sorts of ideas. It would have been fascinating to see your take it.

I really like the inter-play between Jackie and Lucy here, too. I find it pretty ironic that Jackie apparently has demonic heritage and red eyes, but Lucy, a full-blood demon, has black. Odd thing, that.

Yeah, I find there's something really compelling about this kind of half-friendly, half-antagonistic verbal combat between Lucy and Jackie - you put them in a room together, and they just kind of sizzle. I can imagine them hugging each other, or knifing each other - and I imagine that, in both cases, they're smiling at each other while they do it.

And your observation about the eyes in an interesting one. There's clearly something not-quite-human in Jackie's heritage, but given that we've never actually seen any hard facts about her parents, we just have circumstantial evidence to go on. Lucy actually gives us more information than we've had from anyone else yet: that she senses something demonic in Jackie's blood, but that she has a complete soul. Which seems like a strange combination - Lucy is clearly intrigued by it.

Of course, whether or not Lucy is a trustworthy observer here is certainly open to question.

There once was a girl from Jakkard,
Who's childhood surely was hard,
On account of her eyes,
She now constantly tries,
To keep her opponents off-guard.

Oh, wait, you said dirty...

Okay...

Red Jackie had run out of luck,
She was covered in booze, blood and muck,
She had crashed on the rocks,
But then she met a fox,
And they went off together to, um, rob?

:paranoid:

Phew! For a moment there, I thought you were going to imply that Jackie and Trotter's relationship is something other than chaste and platonic. :)

Perish the thought! (to quote Lucy)

I would never question the virtue of Jac..um, that is, the virtue or Tro...ah, hmm.

HEY, WHAT'S THAT OVER THERE!

I know, right? Virtue is the first word which comes to mind when I think of either of them. They are virtuous people.

Like that one time, when she must have been very tired, because Trotter let her crash on his bed for a while - chivalry, thy name is Trotter.

Whelp, I just read Moral Compass so I could read this, and now I guess I am going to have to read all the old Jackie stuff too, so thanks for that. Anyways, this was a great read, esepcially this line:

@ Doctor - I am super glad you enjoyed the story! And, if you do read some of the previous Jackie stories, I hope you enjoy them as well.

I am also tickled by Lucy's conception of optimism. :)

Yeah, I liked that little touch. And I think you played Mal's annoyance just right, too. The poor guy just wants to have some good, old-fashioned demonic fun!

Yeah, I particularly enjoyed the "Who are we not killing today?" bit :D

I had an unholy amount of fun writing for the demons. One of my favorite bits is when Lucy explains that Mal left "once it became clear that this was a talking-and-hugging sort of non-robbery."
