Hello, everyone, and Happy St. Patrick's Day!

This is a long story, long in the making. I will try to be relatively brief, although I do have a lot to say about this particular piece. This story began, as you likely guessed from the two characters listed in the title brackets, as a collab between OrcishLibrarian and myself. I first sent Orcish the PM pitching this idea way back on July 20, 2018, meaning this story is almost five years in the making. He and I developed the idea back and forth, and for a while, I had hoped to get this posted on St. Patrick's Day of 2019. Obviously, that did not happen, but, as our favorite bibliophile himself said once, "late is preferential to never." I am very happy to finally be able to post this, and, against all reason, I truly hope that Orcish himself will stop by at some point and comment on it. And, in fact, some of what lies below was written by Orcish.

As for required reading, basically just be relatively caught up with Beryl and Aloise's canon story, which I believe currently terminates at "Paid in Full" by RuwinReborn. The rest of the story should make sense without context.

I've been a big believer in this story since I first had the idea, and it thrills me to be able to present it to you. I hope everyone enjoys!

In celebration for such a long story and much beloved characters, I'm gonna do a liveblog-type reaction to it :D

(Before I start reading: wasn't there a Beryloise story related to a ring and a very ancient dragon dated after Paid In Full? I may misremember the timeline, though, and I guess it isn't relevant to the story at hand. Edit: that's where the 77,777 steps reference comes from, right?)

live reactions

parting thoughts

Thanks for reading, Huey, and for the thoughtful and in-depth comments. I really appreciate it!

Sweet! Let's do this.

The chronology can get a bit confusing, especially when we're dealing with stories written 8(!) years ago, but "Paid in Full" was posted on June 15, 2015, and "Climb Every Mountain" (the story with the 77,777 steps, was posted on February 23, 2015. I think part of the confusion comes from the facts that "Climb Every Mountain" is a sort of breath of fresh air after the massive Beryl arc hits its conclusion with "The Fire," so it's easy to think that "Climb Every Mountain" came after the Fisco arc, too, but it doesn't. Now, admittedly, I had to look all this up to make sure, so...

Btw, why is St.Patrick's day relevant, if the naming convention and imagery are heavily inspired by Scotland? Isn't Patrick more of a Irish patron? Wouldn't the Scottish equivalent be... St. George? *looks it up* Ah, St. Andrew, of course.

Oh yeah, that's exactly how it went; the stories are much closer to each other than to the present, after all. Eight years, what the hell...

I never really did explain that, did I? Yeah, the storyline is based on a Scottish legend, but the plane of Ceolré itself is heavily inspired by both Scottish and Irish influences. Most of the proper nouns are taken from words in Irish Gaelic, in various bastardized forms. I think I took one or two from Scots Gaelic, but more from Irish. So I tend to think of this story as a "Celtic" story, which would include both Ireland and Scotland (and others besides, but those were the focuses of this plane). I will also give a very minor note that the way Aloise describes her solution to the enchantment problem, to "wrap the enchantments in on themselves" is meant to be a vague reference to the Celtic knot design, and in fact, I picture the runes on her unfolding boat to be in a Celtic knot design.

I know, right? Time is a weird soup, to quote from Critical Role...
