Welcome, everyone, to the M:EM High School!

From the title alone, you have probably guessed that this is, like, the most important thing in the ENTIRE MULTIVERSE!

No, wait, it's the reverse mirrored inverse of that...

Anyway, I mentioned this in another thread, and at least one person expressed an interest, so I thought I would post what I have. The basic idea is that all or nearly all of our characters are all in one place at one time in a High School drama/comedy. This is way, way, WAY off canon, so virtually anything goes! In the next two posts, I'm going to put the characters and their "roles." To start off with, I have assigned virtually every character who is listed on the M:EM Archive Index's "By Character" page a role. These roles reflect the overly stereotypical high school types so often seen in high school movies and TV shows. These roles are by no means set in stone, and if people are unhappy with the descriptors I have given anyone, please just let me know and I can change them. There is some overlap, so if people can think of something better, let's change it up!

As for the rest of this thread, well, I say we just have fun! We can post stories, collab some stuff, just do whatever. Have fun!

And, as an example, here is the story I started writing with this set-up. I did not get very far with it, only around 600 words, but it sort of shows off what I had in mind:

This is so fun! I had to look up what some of the courses where, as they have no obvious equivalent in Italy  Some of the roles are absolutely delightful, especially the teachers. Some specific responses:
-Orida is a metalhead, to me is so obvious it hurts. Probably raised in a very religious or bigoted family that's very worried for her soul.
-If you think about the possible consequences of a reckless sexual life, Tryst's moniker could be darkly accurate.
-What's the difference between Sports, Sporty and Fitness Kids?
-The image of Jade analyzing the dreams of anyone she knows is great.
-Shifter: groan. Also, I can't imagine him being subordinated to the Duchess. Creepy psychology teacher with some kind of tenure, perhaps?
-Nasina: "come into my parl-ehm, office"
-Nasperge's classes must be a hell of a ride. Not life-threatening like Ellia's, though.
-Teacher-Kid non-canon "pairings" are interesting: Antony/Nasperge, Mattias-Maral, Saigo-Raiker (?), Pendulum-Ellia (dunno what Human!Pendulum looks like, but there's something strange going here). Kimberley-Jinsen, Gale-Penelophine and Tey'von-Wanderer are kinda expected.

Also, this is the kind of thing I love to overanalyze, like making small dossiers (example: what classes classes are there, how many are mandatory and how many can be chosen by students? I want to figure out Sharaka's schedule) and scene/rivalry charts. For a while I had hoped it was a fantasy high school, but dragonic and merfolk students would be somewhat problematic from a logistical perspective. EDIT: No, wait, if Sharaka's a viashino... I still want to know how it works with dragons and merfolk. Is there egregious use of magic? It would significantly change sports.

I'd like to suggest Elphimas as the (Overqualified?) Absent-Minded Math Teacher, since their knowledge of mana, magic and planes can be translated into master degrees in math and Astrophysics/Relativity. Are there other roles that need filling?

The short piece is very good, I appreciated the reference to OL's double date series :D

EDIT: should we assume all kids have the same age? Did they know each other beforehand? Oh Joker, I have so many questions...

This is so fun!

:D

I had to look up what some of the courses where, as they have no obvious equivalent in Italy

I'm not sure they all really fit in with American High Schools, either  I just went with what felt fitting, just to get stuff out there.

-Orida is a metalhead, to me is so obvious it hurts. Probably raised in a very religious or bigoted family that's very worried for her soul.

Works for me!

-What's the difference between Sports, Sporty and Fitness Kids?

:paranoid: Huh, well, see, the thing is...HEY! Look over there!

~runs away~

Anyway, I struggled with some, so they got sort of lumped in to vaguely athletic roles. If people have better ideas for any of these, especially the Jock/Sporty ones, please let me know!

-The image of Jade analyzing the dreams of anyone she knows is great.

I had a classmate like that in High School. Not dream analysis, necessarily, but trying to "diagnose" everybody all the time.

Anyway, I agree that the image of Jade doing impromptu dream analysis is funny. What's even funnier to me is when she does it without the other character telling her their dreams...

-Shifter: groan. Also, I can't imagine him being subordinated to the Duchess. Creepy psychology teacher with some kind of tenure, perhaps?

I was really proud of that one. :D

But yeah, Psych teacher makes a lot of sense.

-Nasina: "come into my parl-ehm, office"

Hehe.

-Nasperge's classes must be a hell of a ride. Not life-threatening like Ellia's, though.

Just don't go to him for tutoring. Remember poor Bernou's hand?

-Teacher-Kid non-canon "pairings" are interesting: Antony/Nasperge, Mattias-Maral, Saigo-Raiker (?), Pendulum-Ellia (dunno what Human!Pendulum looks like, but there's something strange going here). Kimberley-Jinsen, Gale-Penelophine and Tey'von-Wanderer are kinda expected.

Yeah, I didn't necessarily try to match people up, but some of those matches were pretty much forgone conclusions.

I think anyone who wants to do anything with this is free to interpret. Personally, I'm looking at this as downright zany, so I say anything goes. I've been picturing it as fantasy, so I do see Sharaka as Viashino, Morgezka as a big ol' dragon, Kirsh and Huinn as Aven and so forth. The fact that Ethal is a merfolk but will likely still be "walking" around, in a setting like this, doesn't actually bother me. :)

I'd like to suggest Elphimas as the (Overqualified?) Absent-Minded Math Teacher, since their knowledge of mana, magic and planes can be translated into master degrees in math and Astrophysics/Relativity. Are there other roles that need filling?

Works for me. I'm sure there are other roles, and some of the "kids" could probably be moved to "teachers" if we wanted to, but it doesn't matter a whole lot.

The short piece is very good, I appreciated the reference to OL's double date series :D

I was fond of that, as well. I was also proud of Kerik being trapped, essentially "off-plane," as it were. Although Jackie's on our list, but come on, how could she not be?

EDIT: should we assume all kids have the same age? Did they know each other beforehand? Oh Joker, I have so many questions...

Like I said, I think we can assume whatever we want to. I'm sort of picturing the "kids" as the senior class or something, but it really doesn't matter.

Have fun!

This made me think about how our characters would fit into various famous fictional highschools, and now I'm picturing the dual-walkers as Sharpay and Ryan from High School Musical.

That brings me to another question- what the heck is homecoming? I watched an entire movie on the subject starring Spider Man and I still have no idea.

Homecoming is a tradition in American High Schools and colleges in the fall semester (usually). It often revolves around an "important" sports game, usually football but not always, and also usually involves a dance afterward. In many high schools and colleges, they devote an entire week (Homecoming Week) to various activities and celebrations tied in with school spirit and pride and so forth.

One of the most common components of Homecoming is the voting of a Homecoming King and Queen, where the popular kids try to get votes to determine who is the "most" popular, who are then usually honored in some way either at the dance or at some time during that week. The Homecoming dance usually rounds out the week, being a formal dance sort of like Prom but quite as "important," if high school social events can be thusly described in the first place.

So I guess it's sort of "Practice Prom..."

I choose to believe that the name comes from welcoming back soldiers from overseas battlefields. Not sure how many of them would be returning to high schools, but maybe it was just a thing everyone did then. Home coming parties all over the place. That's headcanon.

Do I want to know what a "Family Living Teacher" is? Please answer in the form of an explanation of what a family living teacher is.

Just for the record, I'm distinctly disappointed none of them were listed as an overachiever, a princess, or a basket case.

And Ilyta is clearly the history teacher.
Because she actually IS a history teacher.

And I see the Duchess will have to have Zhiran over for some steamed hams.

It's actually from the fact that alumni are usually invited back to watch the game and perhaps be honored if they had done something noteworthy. Also, because in most schools that have a football team it happens relatively early in the semester, say September or early October, it's sort of a "home coming" for the students. I guess.

I'm not sure how common these types of classes are, but they're basically a life skills class offered in some high schools that are geared towards what live will be as spouses and parents. It's sort of like a Home Economics course, but I believe the focus tends to be on relationships, cooperation and compromise, joint budgeting, that sort of thing. One was offered in my high school, but I didn't take it, so I'm not sure what the precise curriculum is.

Alright, Rimarra's in as the Princess. I can move Blink to Basketcase (Now that you mention it, I do picture Blink as looking sort of like Ally Sheedy), Denner can be the brain, Dorn the athlete, and Huinn can be the criminal. All of our bases covered. :D

That's fair.

Maybe they can watch the Aurora Borealis together.

I really wasn't sure which of those to characters to put in which role, but I like the idea of people getting called into The Duchess's office, so I went with this one...

It's funny... I'm pretty sure that at this point in my live (having gone to a fairly nonstandard High School) I'm more familiar with Japanese Anime High School Tropes than American High School Teen Drama Tropes, due to watching way more works with the former origin/setting than the latter.

I may have to write something here with Amah, since the bulk of Night Voices saw her in a (boarding) school scenario. I feel like in a "normal" high school, she's the kid who mixed up a bowl of thermite in the chem lab after doing the regular assignment -- doubtlessly brilliant, but also recklessly dangerous

I could also probably do Viveka as a troubled star athlete, the kind with overachiever helicopter parents/guardians that make sure she competes and wins even if she hates it. Though I should really do more with her in the normal M:EM. Scratch that, I need to produce more in the normal M:EM in general, but I've had a millstone around my neck for a long time when it comes to creative output and I'm really hoping to dislodge it. This novel is 146 thousand words long, I am in what is probably the penultimate chapter, I just want to finish but the going has been so damn tough...

I can see Aria as the Quiet Kid, but I immediately thought of her an Exchange Student (because, changeling :paranoid:.)

I don't want to exaggerate, but this is the best thing in the history of history.

Relatedly, it's also a tradition at most colleges to try to schedule a cupcake opponent for the homecoming game, because the returning alumni want to watch their team win, and the administration wants the alumni happy. :)

I saw Blink as the Basketcase, and I was literally going to ask if her hair looked like Ally Sheedy's!

Also:

Tryst - Horny Kid (sorry...)

:face:

“Hmm,” Aloise said, considering. “Well, maybe Beryl and I can crash their Prom so we can hang out with you there.”

OH MY GOD I WANT TO WRITE THIS STORY.

Suddenly, a loud explosion shook the school, almost knocking them off their feet.

Aloise curled up her face in a sort of grimace. “Chemistry?”

The only problem here is that Aloise would be in that class, too, because we know that she and Beryl have Chemistry together.

:rimshot:

“Ugh, no. I thought about it, but when I got in the pool for practice, Gale was in there and she was swimming circles around me.”

Sharaka and Aloise laughed, but Daneera frowned. “Literally.”

“Oh,” Aloise said.

OH MY GOD I WANT TO WRITE THIS STORY TOO.

* * *

So, I'm picturing...

Hot topic (the story) is fun! I like all the references to the M:EM pieces, especially the fact Jackie can't read :D Is Trotter around? I can imagine Jackie failing classes she could pass in her sleep just to be with him.

Is it bad that I'd like to generate a character purely to serve as the lunch lady?
