It's crazy to think how much of pre-industrial-capitalist life was viewed in terms of spiritual practices. We've probably lost a great deal of that information now, and will never know exactly how ancient people thought about most aspects of their lives. It kind of gives the lie to Marx's view of economics as the bones of culture- clearly other forces predominated in other mindsets.
