Job Interview
I had an expedition coming up,
But all my erudite and courtly charms
Were worthless as an empty water cup.
I needed someone competent in arms.
At length, I saw the thing I had to do,
Although I knew my choices would be hard,
And so, I set my mind to interview
For some protection, my new bodyguard.
The applicant who first came to apply
Was very young, both muscle-bound and strong,
I knew that in a heavy fight, he’d die,
And I would be alone before too long.
The second one was slightly older, but
Was, simply put, a little out of shape,
And judging from his most prodigious gut,
When trouble came, I doubt I would escape.
The third, and fourth, and fifth were even worse,
As things descended down a constant slope,
I felt my search was suffering a curse,
And at that point, I nearly gave up hope.
But then arrived a man in armor clad,
Except his massive chest, which he kept bare,
And I could tell at once that this man had
Survived through countless battles and despair.
I hired him, and thanked my lucky stars
That I had found him. If I guessed correctly,
This
veteran, with all his countless
scars,
Had all the toughness needed to protect me.
