I might play around with the idea that the unexpected vampire party member temps the father to this conclusion via his desperation and fury at falsely hopeful attempts, so that he may preserve the spring for the sake of using sangromancy to repurpose it: a Bloody spring for himself and his kin, of which he swears the father's son will become and whom he will be able to care for if the spring comes under his control. All that's left are the events leading up to it.
I think that might be overthinking things really. Probably gilding the lily. This IS just a short story after all.

Well, that does also kind of dissolve the vampire's moderately pure reasoning for joining their party to go after the spring. >.> Hmmm

Play to the strengths the vampires have. Nobody trusts them, but a lot of times, they're the only local guides people can get. Black is known for Greed after all.

So... A vampire guide, a human lullmage, a semi-elderly human druid, a wealthy human healer, and possibly a goblin tag-along? No real overlap here? (Healer is both the instigator of the expedition and a healer is generally a bonus good thing to have, lullmages are good for assisting with the Roil, druid for the metaphoric "landfall" needed for the spring, and the goblin for blowing up/"sacrificing" the spring, and the vampire a more direct guide through I guess)
Well, I think the goblin might be more than absolutely needed, but if you feel like he fits, it's all good. 4 is a good party number. 5 starts to crowd things, but that's really preference among other things. It's nothing that would break the story.

It's fine as is, the goblin serves the party in a Heist movie kind of way, and of course as some source of mild humor, as goblins often are. Also, together, they are each of the 5 colors, however in a non-frivolous manner. They all have a purposeful function that almost entirely matches with an appropriate color.

Near Halimar, amidst the rocks, A melancholy tower squats Its walls are high and slick and sheer, And only ‘zoa dare come near Save when a mage hears some old tale Of knowledge lost beyond the pale And strives to ascend its dark height To find what it keeps out of sight
A mermaid came from far away Looked up at it at end of day And thought “I can ascend through here. Knowledge is not a thing to fear.” And so entered, and closed the door And silence reigned out behind her The wind blew fierce from heavens high And Gomazoa drifted by
Archmage alone could climb the tower Archmage alone would seize the power Such spells she cast and up she rose And found the power only grows Through the ascent. Mind open wide She sought all that the world would hide And reached at last the final door And entered it, the topmost floor
There was every answer unsaid There every truth lost to the dead Who were alone their keepers there And answered any question fair Of what to ask she did well know The wrong of things she would outgrow Fearing her faith could lie in frauds “What is the nature of the gods?”
The tower answered well and true. As in the night a cold wind blew, A form fell from the heights and crashed Down on the rocks, broken and smashed A gomazoa drifted near And brushed the wreck, and shed no tear And lifted it and flew away Its secrets with the dead to stay.
This was the basic outlay for Archmage Ascension I'd had since claiming it, a sort of Lovecraftian base story about too much knowledge having tragic consequences: Merfolk lady quests to gain the nigh-omniscience represented by the active quest card, does so, and then goes mad from uncovering the true nature of Emeria, Cosi, and Ula with it. Suicide was always a distinct possibility, but I had considered writing it in first person, as much of Lovecraft's work, and having the narrator just be hopelessly broken and with no one willing to listen to her. I think it turned out decently as a poem.

I like it. There are places where the meter is forced or broken, but I think that really works with the theme of the poem. I somewhat question the use of "squats," particularly so early in the poem, but that's a minor nitpick. I really like the way you utilize the sort of double meaning of ascend here, and that last stanza, I think, is really very good. It gives that sort of wind-blown desolation feel to the whole thing. All in all, I think this is pretty well done.

Okay. Everything's been claimed, but what's been done? How close is this to going into Stage 2 of Anthology Creation?
Far. It's still in production, even if we're out of pre-production.

Which region of Zendikar actually has Plains and/or actually is fairly sunny? I've been so busy with things, using my idle thoughts to solidify the characters, I haven't been thinking a lot about the geography that IS relatively permanent. All I know is the recruitment of the characters begins at some sort of tavern in Affa. Any tips?
What's the status of this project, actually? I mean, we netted a bunch of writers but we've not seen much of anything produced... maybe it's time to poke them and see what the status of each story is?

I was thinking of this just the other day. The biggest problem is that with tumblr, there's relatively little way to coordinate them easily since we have to speak with each of them individually.

I can definitely say I'm in the early stages, getting details down that I don't want to contradict later, and while I'm aware Zendikar is very chaotic, I must finalize the finer points of Setting Identification, and am working on threats.
You can actually tag people on Tumblr using @[username]. I mean, that'll be public, though, rather than a private message so I don't know if we wanna do it that way.
Tumblr is in many ways a great place for creative endeavors in spite of rather than due to the actual UI.
