Adding to that, the lack of agency in those races is sometimes problematic for the story.

There are mythical monsters that can work, although they are obscure so they would lack the resonance of Sphinxes.

For , the Boroka:

"fond of young children" in the sense of eating them, that is.

For , the Bujanga:

Some brief internet searching found claims that Bujanga is also seen as a Naga with a human upper half and a snake lower half, so making it a winged serpent with a human face wouldn't be inappropriate.

Edit: I wish there was more info available on these creatures in English, but this is all I found.

Or use Chimeras for like squinty eyes suggested:

Also, a Chimera could work for green since some could be created with a human face. I mean, they're very little explored in Magic, you could stylize them for green for your plane without really ruining anything.

Wow, I kinda like both of them a lot. o_o Interesting.

Masticores could also be in there somewhere. Gotta keep the Magic special races alive!

I try to make a reference to Phelddgriff as often as possible.

Phelddagrifs are indeed the best of all the unique Magic creature types. Even if they maybe aren't that unique after all.

That would be a concept of mine, that was submitted in a context in the old forums.

I'm unfamiliar with that one. Oh, well.

So, if people can summon aether constructs of, say, a particular group of soldiers, they could perpetrate a massacre against ANOTHER group of soldiers (or civilians) in order to kick off a war with... well... very little trouble, no?

Hmm. Hmm hmm hmm.

I don't follow the aether construct theory myself, but in theory, yes. Of course, since planeswalkers seem to control even legitimately summoned creatures, you could theoretically do it with either model.

Of course, if you go aether construct, you could attack a group of soldiers with themselves, which should freak them out a bit...

The one I'm waiting for is for someone to write a story where two 'walkers are dueling, and one of them summons a third, then the other summons that same third 'walker, and because of the dumb*** rules change, there are now two of the same person, fighting against her or himself.

Well Barinellos wants Maral to have a Hammer of Porphyros because it's technically possible under the rules so... :P

(That was a really dumb rules change.)

Actually, I've sort of dropped that now. She still wants a Godsend because of the new rules too.
And I have... plans for the Grimoire of the Dead as well for certain characters. But as a book, that one is CONSIDERABLY less of an issue.

We could use more stories about Mubb the Hapless. He appeared in the novel Guildpact, by Cory J. Herndon, in the epigraphs for chapters 2 and 15. Here are the excerpts:

Mubb the Hapless

Karate walker.
That is a green mage that focuses his magic on powering up his own body instead of summoning critters and giant growthing them. I figured that would be a neat twist on green mages.
His purpose is to be the strongest there is. At karate. I figure this walker would be the best hand-to-hand combatant out of any character that isn't like, a dragon or something. Bears though? Totally. Of course once you add weapons or dishonorable ranged magic into the mix things go downhill.
I'm picturing Iwamori/Garruk as a visual (why is Garruk so huge anyway? Does summoning critters make you eight feet tall from all the green mana?). Devotes his/her life to training to fight people, teaching others to fight other others, finding others to fight, fighting others and meditation. Hopes to forge a new martial arts discipline, found a school and die an old man... in battle.
Perhaps splashes red? I see no reason for splashing white when green can do the serene master thing just as well.
