Ah, but then you'll be on the dishing-it-out end of grad school misery. Grad students suffer through grad school so that they can turn into professors, and get revenge by inflicting grad school on the next generation of grad students. That's how the cycle of violence perpetuates itself!

In other news, as may have become apparent from my surge of activity, I am safely back in the Land of Robust Signals. Which means that you all are just going to have to put up with my increased presence again.

I miss the real-life charms of the L.o.W.S. But, when it comes to digital-life feel-goods, there's no substitute for this place. I'm glad to be back with you all. :)

Good to have you back, Orcish, and glad you enjoyed the L.o.W.S. life. :wha:

Ugh, my internet connection cut out right before I made a post and it was lost to the æther. In short: the only emails I receive are the ones I choose to receive, which includes only two ads/newsletters.

Also, after listening to several dramatic readings and a very Pythonesque radio play (entitled: The Heroic Tale of Heroically Heroic Heroes), I seem to be on a bit of an adventure kick and have been thinking again about genre tags for the Archives.

Genre tags would be pretty great since it'd be a good way of testing the viability of actual collections spun from extant material...

We got a loooooot of stories though. Which is good! But also bad.

To be honest, I think I would have a difficult time assigning genres to many of our stories, my own included.

Yeah... I think we'd want to have a rubric for assigning genres, but more than that we'd need to determine what a "genre" for M:EM stories means.

My guess would be...

Adventure: Stories primarily about stuff happening, actions being undertaken. If a story is a laundry list of events, it's probably an adventure
Comedy: Stores that aim to make the reader laugh
Drama: Stories primarily about interpersonal relationships and the struggles of individuals. If a story is a laundry list of changing opinions, it's probably a drama
Exploratory: A story that aims to have the reader learn about the setting and/or characters more than to relate a narrative.
Tragedy: Stories that aim to make the reader cry.

Can we make the tag "That's So Raven!" instead?

I prefer to be thought of as a Raven madman.

Well, the nice thing is that we wouldn't have to categorize ALL the stories, just the ones that stand out as belonging to certain genres, so that might make things a little bit easier, since we wouldn't have to worry as much about the ones that defy categorization.

"Stark Raven Mad" then?

"Stark Raven Mad" then?

Works for me.

Or a Raven Lunatic, if I'm working with Lord Luna...

Yes! Now I really want the two of you to co-write a story under that pseudonym.

The genres from my other favorite fanfiction website:
Romance
Sad
Comedy
Slice-of-Life
Tragedy
Dark
Random Adventure
Alternate Universe
Crossover
Anthro
Human

You can, of course, ignore those last four. But The reason I'd been thinking about genre tags is because every story on said unsaid website (which listeners familiar with my ramblings can probably deduce rather easily what site that is) has at least one tag, and anecdotally have two or three tags on average. So, yeah, my intention would be to find genres to fit every story in the Archives, though this might need to wait until we have some sort of front page in which to post them in a more UI-friendly way.

I'd be game. It might even get my name in the Archives, though I'm not sure how MUP are tolerated by the mod staff. I can't seem to find it explicitly against the CoC (from a quick glance), but I know MUPs have been deleted in the past.

It hasn't slowed Pablo down much to my chagrin so you're probably fine with a MUP. It'd be awesome to see you writing again, Luna. Since you're, y'know, good at writing.

I should point out that all this stuff, author tags, genre tags, everything, can be done fairly trivially in the wiki itself using categories and a bit of coding magic.

Hey, I wanted to thank everyone again for the well wishes and let you all know that I am back in action! Woo! Yeah!

Hey, so how does filing for unemployment work?

I would tell you if I knew, but I actually honestly don't.

Anyways, good to have you back in action. Now let's go walk away from some explosions without looking back at it.
