A plane based on Australia.

Introduction

Spoiler

Trancetime

Spoiler

I'll add the races later. I'm still figuring out the factions in this world; a part of me really wants to make this a wedge set, and I have basic concepts for wedge factions which are different from both the Tarkir clans and Namacanaan's worlds.

Barraw, huh? Is it near the Wheel? You know, Wheel-Barraw...

~sigh~

Anyway, there isn't a lot here to go on yet. The land seems interesting enough to me, and I would like to see a Magic Australia outside of the Homelands influences, so that's good. I'm not sold on Trancetime yet, only because it seems like one of those things that could very easily go awry, but I do think it has a lot of potential. I'm just concerned about how prevalent you make it seem. But that's just my initial reaction, of course. I've been wrong about these things before.

You're right to be cautious. Something like the Trancetime has massive implications.

How useable it is will become clearer once I get to the races :)

So yes, I've decided, this is a wedge set. Here's an introduction to the concept of tribes, and the first of them to be presented, the Aningan:

Tribes

A plane without a clear, unified civilisation, Barraw has multiple tribes. Some of them are united by race, others by a common ideology, others still by cultural practises. However, over time, most tribes have come to associate themselves with five major socio-cultural groups, predominating over Barraw's different territories. None of these tribes are truly unified, rather they are composed of many different sub-tribes, which are just as commonly in conflict amidst themselves as with outsiders.

Most Barraw tribes are nomadic, as the plane's environment doesn't allow a permanent residence. Relationships within and outside the tribes are thus exceptionally complicated diplomatic affairs, just barely avoiding full out war thanks to the common efforts of their shamans and some of their leaders in reminding people of past wars. Nonetheless, even this doesn't discourage violent schirmishes every once in a while.

So, I've been struggling with what the White iconic should be for this set. Rainbow Serpents (Dragon Snakes) serve well for Red, Blue and Green, Demons well for Black and Ropens for Black and Blue. Yet I can't find a good White iconic.

I've thought about Wandjinas, but I'm not sure, since they're more connected to rain than anything else. Thoughts?

The Aningan are interesting, though you started to lose me with the nomenclature near the end (I would use Cyclops as your primary descriptor and the more world-specific term as a secondary. Also, I have no idea what a thylacine is, so I have no idea what the Taika are...) I like their community focus to tie into the , too, and both the Aven and the Viashino here are pretty interesting.

My one main problem with the Aningan write-up is this:
To survive in the outback, the Aningan have a close understanding of how the wilds operate, exploring them and sharing this knowledge with the group. Because to survive in the desert you need cooperation, but also exploration and resourcefulness, the Aningan have a curious dichotomy between valuing their community and family, but also individual merit and resourcefulness.

Maybe it's just me, but this reads as very , a color to which the Aningan have no affinity. It just struck me as a little odd while reading it.

As to your "Iconics," apart from demons, I honestly don't see anything "iconic" about them. You'll have to pardon my ignorance a bit here, but I have no idea what a Ropen or a Wandjina is. None. And I really don't feel like doing research to find out. Dragon Snakes I can grok, but the other two are lost on me. I'm assuming the others are references to Australian/Aboriginal mythology or belief, but just because your plane is based on Australia doesn't mean you need to get everything in, and it doesn't mean that everything you put in needs to be Australian/Aboriginal.

I would suggest perhaps color-shifting Sphinxes into White for your iconic, or maybe making them iconic for your wedge.

But again, that's just my opinion.

I mean iconic in terms of function. Archons for instance are not very well known, yet they work well as iconics for White when they're needed.

I think I'll have Pterons as the White iconic. Pterons have a history in the Mirrodin and Scars of Mirrodin blocks, but they haven't been made into a functional creature type. But since Creative appearently wants to make a prehistoric plane, maybe I can call dibs and debut Pterons first?

A Ropen is basically a creationist hoax, a claim that pterosaurs survived in New Guinea. However, in retrospect I will abandon this idea, because A) there's a lot of bad mojo about Ropen discussions, B) the Wikipedia article was deleted for that, and C) with Pterons I can't afford to confuse people.

A Wadjina is an australasian mythological creature that look like the Grey aliens. I think they'll probably never see the light of day in Barraw, because the name's too long and they kind of look stupid.

A Thylacine is this.

You could take Pteron as a creature type and use Ropen as an indicator, like how the Nezumi are given the creature type Rat. Knowledge has been connected to white, I think. Maybe make it clear that your RBW group is using that sort of wildland knowledge.

That's a very good idea, yes. Good thinking :)

When it comes to their wilderness wisdom, I chalk it up to their Red side, since we do have precedent in mono-Red groups with that.

So, is the Trancetime clear enough for people?
