Well, here we are.

It's been quite the ride, but I'll spare you any sort of flowery introduction, and let the work stand on its own.

Rest for the Wicked

1. The Death of Him

2. The Edge

3. Accountability

Thanks to everyone who reads this - though I imagine I'll be repeating this a lot as the comments begin. Really, it would not be the same without this community!
I don't think anything about us would be.
You guys are all great.

Special thanks as well to OUR DARK AND UNFATHOMABLE MASTER, BARINELLOS - MAY ALL WHO DARE UTTER HIS TRUE NAME KNOW ONLY DESPAIR - for the sinister background presence in this story. (Those are actually his characters, no the maddening essence of his being).

Stay tuned folks... this story isn't over yet.
Though I will let people work through this wonderful piece before we take that next little step. It's important that people get a chance to appreciate this one.

Which, in case one is incapable of reading between the lines, means that I quite thoroughly enjoyed it. I would normally say more, but on a piece this long, it takes too long for thoughts to render about specifics.

I think that Ruwin has produced something genuinely, wonderfully beautiful, and I am just so grateful to him. I feel privileged to have been involved.

I just wanted to let you know that I've started in on this, and read the first three parts, and I'm enjoying it immensely. I would push on and finish it, but sadly I have run out of time, as I have several school-related meetings today. I'll get to the rest later tonight, and provide more specific comments. Looking forward to the conclusion of this one, though!

Okay, I have finished reading this. I will restrict the bulk of my comments to the much-loved spoiler blocks, both for length and for, well, the intended purpose of spoiler blocks, but I will say this outside of them, because it needs to be said where everyone can and will see it.

This was absolutely wonderful. Amazing work from all parties involved! Thank you for making this.

(What do you mean, extollation isn't a word! Someone get me Websters on the phone! This is a Duketastrophe!)

Buy my book! Buy my book! Buy my book!

Man... the Critic has it over anything produced in the last ten years by a huge margin.

Now, this section also brings up a question I've had about Jakkard for a long time, but have never gotten around to asking. What exactly is the religion we see in Jakkard like? I mean, the specific mention of the Sisterhood of Angelic Mercy REALLY puts this in a fairly Christian-like faith, at least as far as some of the word choices and behaviors. Has this facet of Jakkard lore been codified at all? If there is a sisterhood, I would imagine there is also a brotherhood of some sort. Are there priests who are referred to as "fathers" (I'm actually hoping the answer here is "yes," because it gives me an idea for a Jakkard story, and compared to you and Orcish, I've been slacking on Jakkard stuff...unless you could the poems/songs separately, I suppose...)

The long of the short of it is, "yes, but no."
I mean, I could get into a LOT of talking about the issue, in part because there's a lot that hasn't been officially codified, but with which I did begin laying framework for before Keeper decided to leave it freeform. Now, I don't consider my particular interpretation canon, but I did give it a lot of thought and... well, if you have questions, hit me up and I'll lay out what I thought. What to do with* them is up to you, but I wouldn't mind the consultation.

*The reason I starred this was the sudden HORRIFIC image of "Smokey the Oso Del Diablo."
Which for all the running joke it is, I am mildly sad it has never gotten a story dedicated in any fashion to it.

I'm so glad you enjoyed it!

My thoughts are mostly drinking root beer and waiting for the hot dogs to cook at the (spoiler) block party below:

On religion in Jakkard: So, I honestly can't speak to what has or hasn't been established as canon previously. For my part, I've mostly just been making it up as I went along. Which doesn't mean I'm attempting to assert my own notions as canon, either. There could certainly be multiple belief systems.

For my part, I've been envisioning a kind of loose religion somewhat in the model of charismatic Christianity. In part that's just because I have cultural references for that sort of faith tradition, which makes it easier for me to think about. But also because, in my mind anyway, it fits in with a lot of Western tropes. I've referenced seven heavens and hells a couple times in these stories, and I vaguely think I may have lifted that from a Jakkard story by someone else? I specifically liked the number seven in this context just because of its lucky connotation, which again seemed to fit with the setting. And again, references to things like damnation and baptism are convenient for me as a shorthand, and have some nice Western-y baggage associated with them, but I'm not using them to imply that those practices are literally observed on Jakkard.

Some slightly-spoilery thoughts on the subject below:

I dispute your assessment of your own work, but I totally think the priests should be called "father." Especially if you have a good idea for how to use that.

Oooh, can we take turns butchering that scene, can we? Can we? Can we?

That would be fun.

Actually, come to think of it, we should make a special thread called "Ruin Ruwin," where we take some of our favorite RuwinReborn scenes and rewrite them in ways that make them vastly inferior to the original.

This is a good idea...

I probably picked the worst possible time to read this since I've been in kind of an Emotional State of my own recently so some of this didn't quite connect with me the way it maybe would have otherwise. That said, there's a few moments that really did work for me. So uh... here's my attempt at articulating some of that stuff I guess?

Spoiler

So yeah, I liked this, but in like... a weird way that's pretty affected by my own mental state.

Well hey, thanks for taking the time to read this at all, Keeper! I'll go ahead and address some of your concerns in the spoiler below.

Spoiler

As for the orphanage scene, I can probably safely say that it's our strongest scene in the whole story. It was written equally by OL and I, with bits and pieces of it strung together in a way that just really clicked for both characters. It's my favorite section, personally, and really highlights the sort of thing that people like Jackie and Fisco need - accountability. Consequence.

Anyway, my blabbering aside, thanks again for reading, Keeper. Hope everything gets better for you soon! :)

As for Jackie's gang getting sidelined - that was just... a logistics issue, really. Too much going on. Four planeswalkers - two of which are chessmasters - a rail magnate, a kidnapped fox, more demons than you can point a gun at... well, there just was not a whole lot of space. I wish there had been, but instead, it was decided that the story should focus mainly on Jackie, and that's what we did.

Also, it's kind of a sign of how close to unhinged Jackie comes as she spirals further and further into herself. The plan she has at the end of "The Sincerest Form of Flattery" is the right plan, and it's a very Jackie plan -- let's get the band back together, and we'll deal with this together from a position of strength.

Which, more than anything else, has always been her greatest "power," so to speak. She's smart, and she's a quick draw, and she has a very good grasp on psychology. But her real "superpower," if you will, was her ability to recruit talented people and get the most out of them. Dazie, Presto, Hush-Hush (even the demons, up to a point) -- they're all extremely competent, but difficult to manage for various reasons. Jackie's special sauce was that she could get them all rowing in the same direction, and as a group they could accomplish things which should have been way out of their weight class.

But, after Trotter gets abducted and she starts retreating into herself, she winds up playing against her strengths and shutting her allies out. She tries to get them out of the way -- partly because she is trying to protect them, but also because she doesn't want to have to answer the questions they are going to ask her.

It's a very small scene in the scheme of things, but one of the moments in "Blood on the Tracks" which always kind of chilled me is when Dazie tries to put the reins on Jackie, and Jackie just dismisses her out of hand -- "I didn't put this up for a vote." Because that's so un-Jackie. If she's in her right mind, she wants to hear Dazie's opinion, she wants the people around her to question her. I always think about the go/no-go meeting before they raid Brax's compound, for example. That's the kind of savvy leadership which I associate with Jackie. This is the opposite. Basically, from the kidnapping on, Hush-Hush are the only people she takes into her confidence, because -- due to their own peculiarities -- they don't question what she does.

Like you said, we probably move over it a bit too fast for our own good. But that was my thinking along the way.

Anyway, thanks for reading, Keeper, and I'm glad you liked the ending. That ending became very, very important to me, and so I'm happy that you enjoyed it.

At a meta-level, I think there's something very fitting and very satisfying about this. Working with Ruwin was such a pleasure from start to finish, and I'm happy that maybe the best part in the whole story turned out to be the part which involved the most active co-authorship. That seems, well, right.

I have really enjoyed the entire Red Jackie series, and while this is likely her last adventure (for a while?), I do hope we can see more of her in the past, or maybe even some short stories with her and Trotter as teachers. She's a very fun character.

I loved the entire thing, but the scene in the orphanage with Fisco and Jackie, particularly Fisco's confession about Cosette, was simply amazing.

One concern I do have is how confusing it is what actually happened by the end of the story. Most of what Ruwin listed doesn't seem to be stated, or really even implied, by anything in the story. When I first read this, I had many of the same questions Keeper did. When this is added to the archives, future readers will finish this story not entirely sure what happened. While this is okay with the Liar's goals, as they are going to be revealed later on, it doesn't seem that the Duchess' and Shifter's involvement will be explained any further.

I'm very happy you enjoyed the story/stories, Moonbeam!

She has been tremendous fun, and I'm hoping she'll be back, too. Speaking purely for myself, I am planning to let her enjoy her rest, but I've said that before only to make a liar out of myself later. I'm sure that there are stories from her past which it would be fun to explore, and, like you mentioned, I suspect that some stories might shake out from the people who make their way to Red's. And she is very much a public character, so anyone who wants to tell a Jackie story can do so.
