I want to specifically ask all my friends here in the AF&S: if I were to work on another flavorful voting game, what plane/set should it be set on?

I developed one for M13 way back when, but I completely missed my timing and then the legendary cycle wasn't reprinted, which functionally cut off my entire premise, so I just kind of threw it away without ever releasing a beta.

So what I thought is, I'm willing to waste my time trying to make a game rather than waste it playing one (Terraria, specifically), so why not ask everyone where it should be?

Of course, I'm going to have to provide just a few stipulations.

First, my reason for making voting games is ultimately to make a Guildwars sequel, so a general (by which I mean traditional, or "the way they're usually set up") Ravnica will be out. If it's strange enough, like the Guild-specific mini-games Skibo ran just before GWIII, then I'll consider it, but don't just say "Ravnica" or "Return To Ravnica" without some interesting twist.

Second, I'm currently burnt out on Innistrad, so again, I'll likely reject anything to do with it. I've spent the last two weeks devoting a lot of free time to reading and revising the works in the upcoming Innistrad Anthology from the M:EM, so I'd frankly like to get away from the setting, which I never really liked to begin with.

As an additional note, I have the rules for 16 voting games from the mothership, and while I think most of them have links to the actual threads on the mothership, I have more links and rules to the "Creating:" threads and Betas, as well as a few miscellaneous links; so if anyone is curious or would like to see, I can provide lots of information.

(I can post the beta rules of my M13 game if anyone actually want to see that, too.)

Mercadia

No, actually think about that one, because I feel like it has a lot of interesting layers to work with and it is FAR removed from recent everything.
And it could use more attention because the poor thing got wedged in at a time that was really bad for the game.

I'll definitely consider it, though to be honest I'd have to research any setting before Mirrodin. I came in just about the time Time Spiral was released, when Ravnica was still on shelves; and I learned about Mirrodin and Kamigawa after finding a booster or two. Anything before that, though, I'd have to research. Not that I wouldn't mind, it would just push production back and perhaps require a collaborator.

I can stand in for that.
Besides, I think everything prior to Mirrodin is tapped material for this kind of event anyways.

Well, thanks for plugging it, but it isn't quite ready yet.

No, but really, you couldn't feasibly do a commander voting game in the same vein as all the others simply because it isn't a setting and spans too many disparate settings. It's a format and tie in product, not a setting.

It's... Kind of difficult to explain without a clear example. It started with a crazy game in Magic General on the mothership; someone listed all of the rares in Shards of Alara and people voted up their favorite and voted down three others. It went in increments until only one rare remained.

BUT, Skibo converted that idea into a more rpg-esque forum game. The game gives factions to join, and people vote for and against them in a way flavored to be "attacks" and "reinforcements." Players may also swear loyalty to a single faction to gain that faction-specific power (originally in exchange for only reinforcing that faction; later iterations saw loyalty as mandatory).

The format was tweaked a lot during Skibo's reign, so there's a lot of things I already know do and do not work, as well as having jointly run my own M12 game that was even more rpg-esque that allowed players their individual characters in a last-person-standing game.

I think among those that played Skibo's games, though, the ones that stand out the most are the Ravnica trilogy, Guildwars I, II, and III. Besides being a very large game with 10 guild factions, they were all highly complex because each guild had 3-4 abilities; though it may be just that we had some epic storytellers back in the day, with huge overarching plot lines and plane-spanning schemes and characters like Remdas Keeper, Velocity, Altair and Lyra, Skarkus, and Omega. It was the Guildwars games that had the most role playing and flavoring, so that's what I want to build up to.

I have to agree. Commander is the official EDH, which flavorfully is already extremely similar to how most flavor games go. It would just be too difficult contorting the game to fit the way Commander plays out.

I do like the idea of using the legendaries for factions, but I don't actually know if I could manage to make it in a way that isn't just a text-duel EDH game.

I would be interested in playing, and I second Mercadia for the setting. Which reminds me, I need to finish that story I was writing which was set there...

I have no strong feelings for any setting; I would just need to research pretty much anyything pre-Alara. But getting voting games up and running again would be fantastic. Reading through GW 1 is what sucked me into the F&S board on the mothership, and actually playing in GW is an experience unlike any other.

Mercadia sounds cool. Personally, I think New Alara would be a great setting as well, if Ravnica and Innistrad are out of consideration.
And I'd definitely be interested in playing this if you get it going.

New Phyrtexia would be cool. I want to join the Machine Orthodoxy.

For me it was Eldrazi Arisen. I think it was the first time I visited the old F&S and I marathonned the entire thread over a few days. With lMarcusl as Ulamog and Omega137 as Kozilek (I may be wrong on which titan was whom), it was utterly captivating.

Also, where have you been, man? I know you usually hang out in the pbp area now, but you never even responded to my interest check (and Planeshaper told me LordM backed out of all his current things for meatspace issues).

After a cool-down period I could probably tackle Innistrad, but right now I just don't want to deal with it anymore. If this takes off and/or garners enough attention, I may do it later on. Mostly it depends on who and how many express interest in seeing Innistrad as the setting. Innistrad Proper got a mafia game (that I did not participate in and have no idea how it went), while Avacyn Restored had a short regular voting game (with an experimental map mechanic) to it.

The Progress Engine won last time. It was my... third, I think, voting game (i.e. one that I was a part of, not one I was involved in developing). BUT, that particular one was suuuuuuuuper simple, with five oldoldold abilities, one for each faction. Even so, it still went over a thousand times better than the Scars of Mirrodin game. Point is, there's still plenty of room for a good game even if it has been run before.

Just a heads-up. All type of forum games are expected to go in the Play-By-Post area. I can probably negotiate on this and I've already planted that seed before, but I'd like you to be fully informed.

Be prepared! That's the boyscout's marching song...

Oh, I already planned on that. Thanks for the reminder, but the purpose of this is to see what setting people around here would most like to see, since the AF&S will probably compose most of the players even if it was put in the pbp area. (I have evidence for that statement: my interest check thread from a few weeks ago only got one user response.)

I think we all have good memories of the voting games, Guildwars in particular (which reminds me I still need to copy edit and polish the tale of Altair and Lyra, even if I did get in on the canon-shattering goodness that was a large part of Guildwars)

Ideas Expanded

Mercadian Masquerade
Saprazzan: Political maneuvering abilities
Kryern: :bl:/Strike from the shadows
Cateran: Shifting Loyalties, heavy damage
Cho-Arrim: Lifegain/reinforcemet bonus
Wild Powers (Rushwood/Deepwood/Dryad):
Mercadian: weaker abilities with a penchant for goofiness, but stronger starting position.

Innistrad: Lunar Eclipse
Werewolves: "Transform" Gaining and losing faction abilities based on external factors
Skaberen: Assemble Skaabs. Looks like the place for a supertoken/custom token like Simic Ooze or Selesnya Wurm.
Ghoulcallers: Strength from death, rather directly. raid old golgari abilities?
Vampires: Need something for blood drinking.
Demonic Forces: Demons with devilish/cultist henchthings. Token making faction?
Geists: Intangable nature makes them deal/receive less damage on a whole
Humans: Somewhat vanilla faction. Posssible Fateful Hour/Turns Red mechanic.

Innistrad: Hope Rising
("Allied" Factions -- get some sort of benefit for helping each other out. Possibly win together?)
Flight Herons: Angelic. Protective
Flight Alabaster: Angelic. Death-matters
Flight Goldnight: Angelic. Aggressive
Skaberen: Mortal. Creative
Ghoulcallers: Mortal. Swarming
Cult: Mortal. Manipulative
Geists: Unholy. Mysterious
Vampires: Unholy. Blood-drinking
Demons: Unholy. Loners.

Theros: Call to War
Akros: Warlike, agressive
Meletis: Tactical, thinking
Setessa: Natural, team-centric
Returned/Asphodel: Undead faction
Minotaurs: Rampaging, disorganized

Theros: Gods and Monsters
Plays out like Eldrazi -- A few players pilot giant monsters as universal enemies, others enter individually following a hero's path.
Great Hydra
Abominable Titan
Devouring Serpent
Kraken of the Depths
Path of Honor/Wisdom/Ambition/Battle/Might

Just want to chime in that in Mercadia, Szat left out the Rishadan people.

Oh hey, that actually reminds me: Tevish, you had an excellent Innistrad game pretty much set up with a Corruption mechanic before Skibo stepped in with... did he run the mafia game?

Anyway, point is, you had a great thing going and we could always finish and/or run that.

Barinellos wrote:

That's okay, I haven't started any research yet anyway.

Right... there was that one! Wonder if I can find my notes.

Speaking of notes, I did this one last night.

I should have a link to your original thread around, if I hadn't outright saved the original outline; that's if you didn't have extra information stored yourself.

As for your Theros outline: I love how you borrowed from Eldrazi Arisen, but honestly I think the monsters are WAAAY too powerful for anything less than an army of players. I know Eldrazi Arisen really just barely fell to the Titans, and I'd have to see the number of players that were in the game, but I just don't see us having enough players yet to pull it through as-is. Of course, I know one of the things working against the players (as opposed to the three "bosses") was that the Titans gained life for defeating player characters, and there were several that showed up for a day or two and then disappear.

I really love the idea, though; it holds massive amounts of flavor potential, but I worry about turnout. I'm kind of pessimistic that way, I guess.
