I remember the first round of this. I ended up replying with an overly-detailed write-up of Muv Luv (since furry holds no interest to me but VNs do). The topic is interesting in abstract; if you'd like I could try to go through the cast of another VN with which I'm familiar.

VN protagonists, or game protagonists in general really, can be hard to pin down. THey have to do whatever the player makes them do, and that can muddy things.

I would say that only applies to some game protagonists, though. VNs in particular give you a finite number of choice nodes, and the author can say what's a choice and what isn't and keep the options within a particular canon personality. Hell, some VNs feature incredibly few choices: The Song of Saya only has two in order to sort between the game's three endings so it's not like the characters "do whatever the player makes them do" in a way that makes them hard or impossible to analyze as characters.

Naturally, you get a character in a genre where the player has more full control and the writing is less developed -- somebody like Link is a somewhat vague existence with some canonical traits and a lot of material open to interpretation based on how canonical you feel what player actions are, where as Grahm of Daventry (and the other protagonists of the King's Quest series) have characters that are at least moderately defined by canon. And then you have truly selectable characters like traditional AFGNCAAP types, the user-created characters of a lot of open-world RPGs, and The Nameless One from Planescape: Torment where the player is in full or nearly full control and there isn't really a canon answer.

But in my analysis entries on these threads I've dealt with the main characters Takeru Shirogane and Shirou Emiya. And I can safely say they're characters with at least as many core, canonical, defining traits as the characters in main-line MtG story writing.

Some of the games I chose do make the character take a more different personality, but most have consistent personalities that a few choices won't affect the color alignment
