I'll be honest, I've been out of touch with the storyline of the game since the end of War of the Spark. I've tuned into a few bits and pieces of flavor here and there along the way these last few years, as some things I've enjoyed in the past have returned, or kept somewhat current on the broad strokes through skimming plot summations and subsisting on the cards and flavor text to get the gist of a sets story. But over-all I've mostly "lost the plot" on a fine-grain level, which was rather apparent to me while having a bit of a story discussion with some friends at FNM recently.
Importantly though, that discussion turned into a fun hypothetical thought experiment. Now that this story arc is coming to a close, if you had to construct a new set of main character-'walkers to focus the next arc on, who would they be and who might be their long-term antagonist? Here is my pitch and feel free to share yours:
Known Upcoming Sets to kick off the new story:
- Wilds of Eldraine (Q3 2023)
- The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
My five-color picks:
-
Quintorius (see below).
-
Will Kenrith -
Liliana Vess -
Rowan Kenrith -
Garruk WildspeakerCode name "Study Buddies."
Rational:
I am aware that Quintorius is not currently a 'Walker, though the consensus amongst my discussion group was that the card
Complete the Circuit from MoM is eluding to his sparking. Either way, I was trying to get a mix of newer and older characters with a good color balance, some narrative equity, and a common set of connections and was having trouble finding a current white 'walker that fit, so here we are. This particular core group revolves around the trio of younger 'walkers in
,
, and
, who have something of a home base in or around Strixhaven and are mentored by two
and
old 'walkers who have....let's just say a
strained history. Liliana is on a path to make amends while staying true to herself and her ambitions, and is brought face to face with an example of her past folly in Garruk, who has come to check on the Kenrith twins. A strange social dynamic is formed where the "adults" work out their guilt and anger issues while trying not to fight in front of the "kids" as much, while also trying to wrangle everyone as a team to fill the void lost by the destruction and scattering of the Gatewatch. There are plenty of multiversal threats that are looking to prey on the worlds devastated by the most recent invasion and it is up to this new group to step up to the task.
Long-Term Enemy:
-
Geyadrone DihadaThe Multiverse's old 'walker with a penchant for bending the strongest to her will is back, and this time she has her sights set on the
last remaining Eldrazi Titan. Will our new team be able to come together, learn to trust each other, and function as a cohesive unit to put a stop to her plans (which we know they will fail doing, but in the end, maybe the end of the story will see a new Titan Trio formed).
