MAGIC: THE GATHERING ANIMATED SERIES COMING TO NETFLIX FROM AVENGERS: ENDGAME DIRECTORS
Share. The Russos are coming to Netflix in 2020.
BY DAVID GRIFFIN Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo are taking their creative talents to Netflix to develop an all-new animated series based on the Magic: The Gathering franchise.

Per Netflix, "The Russos will oversee the creation of an all-new storyline and expand on the stories of the Planeswalkers, which are Magic’s unique magic-wielding heroes and villains as they contend with stakes larger than any one world can hold."

Henry Gilroy (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Jose Molina (Agent Carter) will serve as co-showrunners on the series. For a first look at the show, check out the teaser image below:

"We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us,” said Joe and Anthony Russo. The series will be animated by Bardel Studios. You may have seen some of Bardel's work on Rick & Morty, Teen Titans Go!, and Netflix's The Dragon Prince.

While the plotlines and settings in Magic: The Gathering can change dramatically, they generally always revolve around Planeswalkers, magic users who can jump between different worlds and universes called Planes. The Russos’ show will be a new story that doesn’t follow one that’s already been told, but it could still use some of Magic’s more iconic and recurring Planeswalkers like Jace Beleren or Nicol Bolas.

No official release date has been announced.

Jace? Chandra? Bolas? This show is dead to me right out of the gate...

That's just some stylized Exquisite Firecraft art. Doesn't really tell us anything about what the art style of the show will be.

Hey, don't judge it just yet. I'm pretty sure that that last part was tacked on because the interviewer specifically asked if those characters would show up, and they just shrugged because nothing is written yet. But because it wasn't specifically denied they could put it in the article. And yeah, Chandra is the art. But what else could we possibly expect? They want hype, and you create hype with recognizable characters. There is not enough people invested in the old lore to it worth putting all their eggs in that basket. But if this turns out good (and with that creative team, it could) we might eventually see the stories want as well.

I'm pensively skeptical about how this'll turn out.

I know how you feel. I like Rick and Morty, mostly dislike Teen Titans Go! (though I'm not really the target audience), and wanted to like the Dragon Prince, but the animation early on turned me off. That said, I did enjoy both Clone Wars and Agent Carter, so maybe this will have enough of what I like backing it to move the needle?

I'm relatively, cautiously hopeful about this.
After years of speculations and projects that didn't seem to go past the drawing board, something is finally happening in the Moving Pictures medium.
Making this series its own continuity also allows an easy entry to the story-side of Magic for new audiences. I just hope they won't make it too generic.
