So I'm thinking of using Anurids in a world building idea I'm working on. Right now there are only about six of them in the game and they seemed mostly centered in Green (as alive) and Black (as zombies) with a single outlier in Green/White. While they are currently classified as Frog Beasts, leading me to believe they are more monster than people, the Anurid do seem to carry themselves very similarly to apes, which, in Magic run the gamut from very wild to somewhat civilized. Do you think Anurids could be flavored as a bestial swamp people? All I know about them quite literally comes from their art and flavor text. Was there much about them in any of the books from that time? Are they more like Otaria's Kavu? List of Anurids: Anurid Barkripper Anurid Brushhopper Anurid Swarmsnapper Anurid Scavenger Anurid Murkdiver Wretched Anurid |

Ambassador Lacquatus had an Anurid champion. They follow orders and clearly have some intelligence, but they're not civilized in any capacity. The comparison to apes is very apt. |

This, although I will say that I can certainly imagine a plane in which they do have a developed civilization, and certainly one where they are bestial swamp people with perhaps a rudimentary society. I'd be tempted to use Amphins in that role, personally, but I think Anurids work just fine. |

I wouldn't use Amphins in that role because the one hook we have for them is that they are way more powerful, influential, and advanced (and, well, real) than most folks on the same plane like to believe. Surrakar are probably where I'd go but Anurids certainly seem to fit the bill. Though I'm working on a M:EM story in a plane that has (Advanced, civilized, non-anurid) Frogfolk. |

I feel like Surrakar are the real choices if you wanted to go that route. |

I don't like Surrakar. Anurids at least have Frog as their creature type so even if you look at the art and don't quite get what they are you can look at the typing and be all "oh right, they're big hulking frog dudes, I get it." Whereas the surrakar are like, you look at the art and you're like "it's a rubbery fish dude I guess? What's the deal with this thing?" and you look at the creature type and you're like "that doesn't help at all." |
