I remember a character in Test of Metal, can't remember her name, that was portrayed as very horny and had a very sexual life. I was wondering what you guys think about that and whether or not you would tolerate other characters with similar dispositions.

It all really comes down to how mature the subject is handled. Test of Metal was fairly juvenile.
But a promiscuous character has no real issue in my book, but it really is in the execution.

In Test of Metal's defense since it was a overall excellent book, making a super horny, promiscuous character and portraying them in a serious light is near impossible because not many people know how to portray them in a serious light. No one really does it.

You and I are going to disagree about Test of Metal.
Any sophomoric part of that book was exactly in tone with how juvenile the rest of it was.

Oh dear.

Your bait seems to have attracted an altogether different creature than you intended.

I am sure there have been a lot of stories that seriously and effectively tackle the personal issue (or just nature) of having an excessive sex-drive. "The feelings we all must endure" is probably something that does it pretty well. I'm sure you could find something more impressive and substantial if you read classier things though, i pretty much just read manga.

Expressing sexual desire is a natural thing for just about everyone (excluding asexuals who are also entirely natural, so please don't take offence) but I hate it when it cheapens a character. If a character is otherwise interesting and happens to have a high sex drive, it's fine. If a character is defined by that drive then I find it irritating.

I also hate double standards when expressing sexual desire. The male view is often cast as predatory while the female view is given a pass. It really bothered me in a recent UR when Chandra got to gush about Gideon's hawt bod and his abs. Had they ended it at "He hugged her and his body's strength made her feel safe" then I'd be fine with it. If we read a male talking about a woman's "plump, lush breasts" and basically ogling her, he would be presented as a creep. I don't like the hypocrisy.

I'd be fine with a Jack Harkness-like character.

Yes please, sex is a topic that's woefully underdeveloped in media IMO

Magic already has many horny characters. Bolas and Ugin being the most recognizable.

Get it, because they have horns.

Does Bolas have a sex drive in any of the older canon?

Because if not he and Ugin would be horny very ironically.

I don't know if it really matters. I don't think there are any other living elder dragons, so there isn't anyone for him to do anything with.

Are dragons and elders but not true Elder Dragons of Dominia -- the only survivors of the war were Nicol Bolas, Chromium Rhuell, Arcades Sabboth, Palladia-Mors, and Vaevictis Asmadi, plus some Lesser Elders like Chromium's mate Piru. Every other elder dragon was killed or otherwise duly punished such as by being turned into an Elder Land Wurm. It's possible, however unlikely, that Ugin is somehow related to the True Elder Dragons -- They did basically make him a glowey blue Bolas. Since Nicol is not known to have kept any mates or consorts, that might be a sign it's not quite so important to him...

Or that he just wasn't monogamous. He's evil and conceived at a time when it was popular to have the villains be sexually depraved after all.

Then again, it is said that all dragons in the multiverse are the descendents of the real Elders, which admittedly is both silly and pre-revisionist information. But if it's true only for a couple of planes, then the Elder Dragons must have been pretty active when it comes to reproduction. Even Bolas himself boasts that he has sired whole races for his amusement and populated entire planes only to kill his offspring for fun. And if it's just about sex, I see no reason why Elder Dragons would necessarily have to choose other Elder Dragons and not regular dragons. Some of them are even sapient and can talk, so it's not like they're all beasts. I honestly wouldn't even put it beyond Bolas to rape other dragons off screen if he does indeed have a sex drive. We know he's cruel, he cares only about himself and he has a mind shattering touch. Putting two and two together...

@Ugin: I really don't mind Ugin as a character, but I think it would have been cool if they had made Magic's anti-Bolas a planebound Elder Land Wurm instead of another dragon planeswalker. Someone who is ultimately powerless as a foil for Bolas's huge power, someone who has a personal history with the Elder Dragons (maybe even with Bolas himself) by having been one, someone who can do little more than counsel the weak, mortal planeswalkers who have decided to oppose Bolas, someone who has been waiting to get revenge on Bolas for 20,000 years.
