So, not sure if we've already discussed this, but I was wondering whether we have any definite info about the fate of the Carthalion line. I mean, we know Jaeuhl and Kaysa had a child in around 2944-ish around the time they fled to Yavimaya, and that is also mentioned in The Shattered Alliance, so the existence of that child is post-revisionist information. I'm just a bit confused because the MtG Sally wiki's entry on Jared Carthalion says that he "was the end of the long and illustrious Carthalion lineage". That's probably true for the Carthalions in Corondor, but does it say anywhere in Shadow Mage or Wayfarer or elsewhere that the Carthalions in Terisiare/Yavimaya died out, or is that wiki entry just inaccurate? Probably the latter? I'm only familiar with the Ice Age books and comics, not so much with the stuff about Corondor, so I don't really have a clue about that side of their family. Then again, those comics are pre-rev anyway, so who knows.

I just think throwing a Carthalion into a hypothetical Return to Dominaria would be really, really cool, preferably one that also happens to be the Elder Druid. Maybe a prominent female Carthalion for a change? I mean, Jaeuhl is quoted in flavour text a couple of times, so it's not like he never even existed in the card game and is just obscure pre-rev fluff. Kaysa even got a card in Alliances.

So, I guess there's no weirdly specific reference anywhere saying the Carthalions all died or something? Despite that odd wiki entry?

What do you think about bringing them up again in modern day Dominaria? Cheap namedrop or amazing bit of continuity? For me personally, it would be the latter. Especially when you consider that Terisiare has looked pretty different in every set and story it was featured in, so that continent in particular could do with a few constants. Plus, I just like the idea that there's that one family whose prestige has been waxing and waning over the course of millenia but that's always around somewhere, waiting to produce a new tragic hero. And I think the part about Dominaria having an Elder Druid could be especially relevant post Time Spiral when the plane was in need of healing after the temporal crisis.

I doubt at the point, even if there are any descendants in which the Carthalion name survived, it'd be a pretty minuscule name-drop that might be worth it in the barest of senses.

Well, logically it would make sense if most of Dominaria can trace some of their genes back to the Lion of Carth after 4000+ years, the Carthalions pretty strictly followed the "only one person per generation" trope (I'm sure TvTropes has a catchier name for it). There is no proof anywhere that there were no other Carthalions around. I'm sure whomever wrote that article just meant "the last one in the canon".

In the unpublished Planeswalkers War comics Jared had a kid, Justina, with Kristina of the Woods. But considering Kristina's appearance in Invasion that presumably never happened in the canon stuff.

The former. The amount of time and canon between now and then nullifies any REAL advantage you'd get out of it. You can tell other people how cool it is, but you can't really impress much of anyone with such an obscure reference by today's standard.

Eeh. Time Spiral/10, I'll be generous. Seeing a Carthalion would be like getting Sidar Kondo or Feldon after nearly as long: nice for those in the know, new and thus to be judged by its own merits for those that aren't.

I think a new Carthalion would have to be judged by his/her own merits by everybody anyway, considering it would be a completely new character despite having an old family name. It's not like a name alone makes a character interesting to read about. But why shouldn't the fans who know the name and its past get a cool reference to make them happy? I'm not saying the main character of the next Dominaria block should totally be a Carthalion (I would probably reserve that spot for Jodah, Teferi and Jhoira if I had a say in it), but a supporting role would be nice. Could be the new Elder Druid under the wing of a reawakened Multani or something like that. They really don't need to drop that one particular name to appease me, but I think having a few old references in general helps making the worldbuilding feel more coherent, especially after such a long absence and after so many cataclysms. You can't return to Dominaria without easter eggs after all, and some compensation for WotC's recent disregard for continuity is overdue in my opinion. Heck, my dissatisfaction with that is probably the reason for why I keep thinking about Dominaria a lot these days.
