We know that a return to good old Dominaria is something that WotC wants to do sooner or later, and Maro said that they first need to figure out how to fit a plane like Dominaria into the modern design paradigms and block structure and whatnot. So, broadly speaking, how would you handle a return to Dominaria? What do you expect to be in there? What would you try to avoid? Are there any specific ideas you'd be keen on seeing implemented? Which places or aspects of the plane would you focus on?
Block structure: First of all and probably most importantly, I would make it a double-block (that is, four sets). I do believe this is in the realm of the possible and something Wizards could realistically consider doing. I mean, returning to Dominaria for the first time after
Time Spiral block and then just giving us two sets would be a textbook example of 'too little too late' and would utterly fail to do the plane justice. They did the exact same thing for Lorwyn, and considering we spent six sets in a row(!) in Otaria, I see absolutely no reason why we couldn't have at least four sets for the entire plane.
I would try to cover as much of the plane as possible, with each set focusing on a major continent or landmass plus some glimpses of smaller and more obscure areas. For example (not necessarily in that order), something like Set 1:
the Domains, Set 2:
Terisiare, Set 3:
Jamuraa, Set 4: This one is a bit tricky but I would probably settle for
Corondor because AFAIK, there is a lot of worldbuilding for it but it has had little exposure on cards so far. This approach would allow them to have a clear mechanical and story focus for each set and at the same time show us a coherent picture of how the major places and cultures look today.
Planebound characters I want to come back: Jodah, Jhoira, Teferi, Radha, Windgrace's essence, whatever new form Multani has taken, maybe a cameo of Squee
Pretty much all of them showed up in the
Time Spiral block novels, so there's already something to build on. I'd really love to see Jodah and Jhoira (who are married) working with Teferi (who is still alive because slowtime water) at
Tolaria West. I'd imagine Teferi is probably still trying to find a way to bring back Zhalfir from non-existence. And I'd say it's time for Jodah to be the Archmage Eternal again and be involved with a school. And I'd definitely like to see a war between Keld (led by Radha) and
New Benalia.
Planeswalkers I'd like to see: Liliana, Ashiok, Karn, Gideon (but only because I think WotC wouldn't be happy without using at least one member of the Gatewatch anyway)
Liliana has to be in there obviously so they can show us where she's from and shoot us a few snippets of info about the war that was going on in her backstory etc. Ashiok because I'm still obsessed with the idea of Ashiok doing things with Marit Lage's dreams, Karn because I like him and he has ties to the plane and to some of the characters mentioned above, and Gideon as a concession to the 'New Era of Storytelling'
. I guess New Benalia would be the place to be for him, and I'm interested in seeing New Benalia anyway.
Mechanics: I'd like to see a fair share of returning keywords and mechanics, and of curse a few new ones. I know they won't go anywhere near the level of
Time Spiral, and I don't really think they should, but including as many as they can under realistic constraints would be neat. And if they have four sets to work with, there's some room to distribute them across sets. If there's one plane that should have higher than average mechanical complexity, it's Dominaria.
General look and feel: The nostalgia, easter eggs and references should be strong in this one. Not in the crazy but admirable way that TS block did, with pretty much every card being a reference to something else (we want to see how the plane evolved after all), but it should be clear that this plane is the home of Magic and has a long and rich history. I'd say most areas should have recovered from the events in TS block by now, but some of the changes from that time should still be visible (e.g. some of the mountains being reduced to spires. I mean, it's hard to recover from
that. Maybe people have built rope bridges between them and carved little caves into the stone?).
What I absolutely DON'T want to see: Retcons, glaring inconsistencies in visuals and continuity, anything centered around the Gatewatch, the Eldrazi or a New Phyrexian invasion, neo-Slivers like those from the core sets (not that I'm too keen on Slivers anyway), old characters being written badly and out of character
