I remember buying the Spiritbane theme deck from the Champions of Kamigawa set; in addition to your deck list, there was a lore insert with a very brief story/history on the deck's legendary creature. Here, it was Kumano, Master Yamabushi. Anyone here have links to scans of the other theme decks' lore inserts?

Spiritbane played good enough out of the box, as did the Snake's Path theme deck. Those were the ones I had.
