I don't get the need for Vivien to be more kind or more reasonable. Being a protagonist for a set doesn't make her a hero or in the right. She is an **** Steve Irwin and she is one of many planeswalker characters.

I think it also makes sense for green characters to have the most alien morality from everyday real people.

Crazy theory: What if Ikoria is actually Otaria, during some period of time when it was being attacked by monsters (maybe the mutation is caused by the Mirari)? The differences between Otaria could be explained by the fact that we're viewing Otaria through the lens of an outsider, like Vivien Reid, who is unacquainted with its history.

Note that I haven't followed magic lore for close to ten years and I have no idea what's actually supposed to be happening in the storyline.

A) Its wasted potential. sorely needs villains compared to other colors and Vivien was even sort of set up as that, as the ending of her debut trilogy even compares her to Bolas. Instead, we get a person Ajani smiles his leonin grin at.

B) Unsympathetic protagonists are treated by the narrative as unsympathetic or flawed. Vivien is not in marketing, she's the hero every Creative thinks little girls should aspire to be. Now, these problems are lesser in the book where she is more reasonable, bt most people know her through marketing since apparently Uncharted Realms are too expensive to write.

I might be being too hopeful but here's my prediction: Vivien ends up a twist villian. She looks evil, she sounds evil, she's kind if a dick. It makes too much sense really. Wizards did a lot of set up for this gatewatch thing to not bring them back but what do they really have to fight? They took out two of the biggest threats to the multiverse already. Phyrexia is left but we haven't heard from them in a while. I think its pretty obvious what the next planar threat is going to be. The legion of doom. We have a nice array of semi interesting villian walkers still roaming around, some of them probably upset that bolas didn't take over the world, or perhaps some simply wanting to take a page out of bolas' book, they just aren't powerful enough and need a whole team. Unfortunately the bad guys always lose, and in a desperste attempt 8 years or so down the line they free bolas and/or emrakul or something big to take the gatewatch out. Classic superhero shlock

Keeping in mind that Ob Nixilis wiped the floor with half of them single handedly.
I think Ob has the highest chance of being the next centerpiece villain.

I'm getting some Kaladesh vibes from the story here. Very Disney in presentation. THe moral tale and people's actions seem to follow an almost eerily unrealistic morality tale pattern.
And that planeswalker's guide has an... interesting voice. Lot of exclamation points about all those cute beasties <3 <3 <3!

The whole unbreakable bond at first sight schtick realy bugs me and it seems like everybody views the world in highly symbolic black and white terms.

and importantly how absolutely bungled the story cards are in comparison

This fixes so many problems.

Yeah, the disconnect between the book and the cards was my biggest problem with the story, which is a shame because the e-book is really well written. It's just not what I was really looking for from what I saw on the cards. I don't necessarily believe that shoehorning the Apexes into the story would have been better though. They definitely deserve some story love, but maybe not the main story (#bringbackUnchartedRealmsyouCowards).

I felt the story was a good magic story, WIldered Quest was better but I felt the $4 was worth it. Lukka being the villain along was a fun path and I'm pretty certain it was Oko (if an character we know of) wanting to take down the pretty fascist like Drannith. Vivien change after War felt natural and hopefully we see more walkers and/or events having echoes of the war.
