I'd try to add another joke but I'm afraid it'd be too lintel too late

I'm going to have to lobby against any further puns.

That's hardly a knock on you, so no worries.

Are you concerned that this thread has gone off its hinges?

Man, I always feel locked out of the discussion when everyone's making those awesome puns. It sets the bar really high.

Please stop the puns, the foundation of this thread is sinking.

But puns are the cornerstone of our discussions.

That doesn't sound very concrete, though.

Door puns aside, I just finished going through all of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor last night to grab cards for the Kyren Game and wow there's a LOT of great stuff from those sets. I mean in general there's some really interesting stuff going on there--I think that setting is really tragically undervalued--but there's some amazing surreal artwork.

I'll have to go through it again and get a list together at some point.

I will say (responding to the M:EM blog) I love Crabapple Cohort because it actually plays the part of an oldschool fairy tale. That's the kind of thing the fey would claim. I'll defend it on the grounds that it's more in-theme than edgy.

Also in response to said blog, Halls of Mist is a favorite of mine

....I didn't even notice.

@Szat:

I think what bugs me about it is just the phrasing. The end just sounds way too like... movie announcer voice. There's something very off about it though I can't place my finger exactly on what.

Lorwyn/Shadowmoor happened at a time when I was kinda taking a break from buying new cards for various reasons. I definitely regret that in hindsight because I missed quite a few cool and powerful blocks that way. It took me a while to appreciate Lorwyn, but I instantly liked Shadowmoor. I really would've liked to see a return block that shows Lorwyn in its 'natural' state (and with less unwieldy mechanics). They could have just taken all the cool bits from the Sugar Bowl World plus all the cool bits from Tim Burton World and given it a good shake. The tone of the setting would've turned out more balanced (read: marketable) that way while still being able to incorporate cool Celtic folklore influences and all that. I mean, seriously, it would be their carte blanche to overhaul and reshape the entire plane without technically retconning anything. But given that they apparently didn't even bother to get a damn thing about that plane right in Origins, a return seems even less likely than it did before, and that's probably for the better. Why can't we have nice things...

@ Keeper: Read it in a creaky old woman voice, like the batty old grandma telling folk tales to little kids like she believes them utterly

... but seriously, I get what you mean. If you get a bombastic read off it at all, it turns sour really quick. I tried mulling it over in my head in the "in a world" movie announcer voice and suddenly, putrid!

I can get behind the concept of Crabapple Cohort's flavour text, but the phrasing just kills it for me. Needs more rhyming. The fairy tale feeling drops off pretty sharply after the first line. I could imagine the whole thing as the plot of a fairy tale, but only the first line qould ever show up in that fairy tale.

I really like it in a movie announcer voice. Makes it kinda tongue-in-cheek which I assume it's supposed to be.
