I'm curious if someone tried to portray one of the existing characters (be it Chandra, Nahiri, or any other) using Reubenesque proportions, what would the reaction be? Clearly that would come across as a different body type, but it's also a change from the previous character. Does it get written off as a different art style? Is it embraced as diversity? Rejected as a betrayal? I'm genuinely curious.
Well, as far as I'm concerned, I really like consistency in characters' artistic potrayal, so my reaction in that specific case would be pretty negative. On the other hand, I'd really like them to introduce a new female planeswalker who's consistently depicted with that body shape. It can be really attractive, and the slim-chick-with-big-boobs kind of body is pretty overused at this point.

WHY do I get the eerie premonition of Wizards granting this wish in the way most likely to piss off the people doing the wishing by hiring, say, Lokman Lam to do a new PW?

I feel like Rubens isn't that big a shift honestly. Liliana could work for that I'd say.

Now Ingres on the other hand would be an interesting stretch... or Schielle. I mean y'all know how I feel about abstraction in Magic art though.

[looks up lokmanlam]

huh

well that sure is

bad :)

Yeah, at this point I'd really rather see them coming down harder on divergent depictions than see a variety of types on existing characters.

Though I will say, Kiora has very full hips on her latest card. If that became standard, I'm not one that would complain.

the league of legends artists talk a lot about the most recognizable aspect of a character being their silouhette and i think that is an alright way to describe a character's general body shape.

men get a lot more strangely shaped silouhette's than women, with things like bolas, ugin, and daretti, but even among the more human silouhettes they range from big hulking figures like garruk or ajani to tall and slim figures like teferi or tibalt, with various niches in between. Xenagos and Domri.

Vraska has crazy hair. Most of the female planeswalkers just seem like 20-something thinnish ladies though.

Silhouettes are not only body type though. You should watch face off if you want to learn about silhouettes.

M14 Chandra was the worst. She had a double torso and it was quite disconcerting. Gideon's had some facial issues lately too.

I guess I'm sort of surprised to hear that? FWIW, Chandra, Pyromaster is -- by far! -- my favorite Chandra.

I will definitely grant you that the way they cropped the art to fit the card is a little weird. But, man-oh-man, do I love the full painting:

The pose there is dynamic enough that any anatomy issues don't really stand out.
edit- mind, I wrote that before you image loaded.

I mean, compare the full version to the cropped version on the card: Chandra, Pyromaster. The art loses so much due to the way it was cropped. :(

Pyromaster is not even close to the worst Chandra for appearance.
That hideous duck faced abomination named firebrand is, by a substantial margin, the worst anatomical showing on any walker.

The sad part?
That's actually an improvement.

So they created the Cursemute then immediately killed the Wolfir off screen.

Brilliant. A+ serial narrative. Well done. Excellent use of resources. Fantastic artistic integrity that is in no way totally beholden to focus testing.

I'm going to guess that there will be a UR that explains what is happening to them. From the last UR with Avacyn, there was that one guy who was cured of the curse under the Cursemute, but then reverted to being a werewolf later. It may just be that only a small number of werewolves even became Wolfir to begin with, with many former werewolves just being cured all together. Then when the Cursemute seems to fail, they revert back to werewolves and the few wolfir that are around don't revert, but are hunted by crazy angels and scared townsfolk who can't really tell the difference between a wolfir and a werewolf in the heat of things.
