It's a bit of a fine line for that. By rights, if they apply their metrics evenly, they should probably be getting rid of angels and demons for the same reason, but they won't. (Not that I'd want them to either, to be upfront)

There is also;

-Rakshasa losing cat and getting a full redesign. This was part of seemly them soft-rebooting Tarkirs flavor (no word fully give but was part of Khans coming to arena). This also why naga are now snakes.

-Efreets are now Djinn. This is part of Tarkir as well.

-Cephalid are now octopi, this them now wanting animal-folks to match what animal they are folk of.

Fist off, everyone hide the Homarids.

Likely crabs, a crustacean creature type would be better though.

Yes and no. Rakshasa being cat people has no mythological base and something DnD put in. People where NOT offended by this but more expressed wanting something more faithful to the mythology.

Myth wise efreets are just types of djinn and magic lore hasn't really done much to separate the two out enough or have their own twist to really show why they should be separate.

Nagas I can't be sure of, best guess is that myth wise naga are closer to being gods/demigods/angels than just snake folk. I also wonder if Neon Kamigawa had something to do with it since it had non-naga snakefolk and snake tribal already being a somewhat of a deck.

Cephalid and viashino are falling in line of beastfolk in magic being the animal type they are (leonin are cats, aven are birds, ainok are dogs) if they are not drawing from a specific mythology. If I had to guess why this is happening I think it's likely Bloomsburrow having lizard people and the line between cute critter lizard folk and viashino brining up if viashino should just be lizards.

Maro touched on it, they would be willing to rework or de-flavor angels and demons if people from those faiths expressed feedback on how they want them to be better. Seemly most people of western and Christian traditions currently are mostly fine with now magic has used their mythologies while those of other places have expressed a desire for magic to be more accurate as here is there less repression of their stories here.

It also has an impact on Viscerid, but that's like 3 cards total.

Wouldn't it be funny if everything labeled Ghoul suddenly picked up the djinn type too?

The reason I'm even being pedantic about it in the first place is the ancient lore that Viashino were descended of dragons. Sure, it might be bunk that is a held in world belief, but it nevertheless bugs me.

I think the problem I ultimately feel about that is just an instance of critical mass and a subset of individuals speaking on behalf of larger communities. It isn't like any culture is monolithic, after all.

And thats my point above, ghouls are clearly a type of zombie in magic, so I don't feel like this needed. If efreets where defined as something more then just "red beings similar to djinn" I could see an reason to keep them separate.

And Ixalan goblins looks like monkeys and Kamiagawa turtle like but both are just still goblins. Viashino being draconic on a. few planes isn't true for all of them partially as most creative members past and future have said they are meant to be more lizard folk and not dragonborn.

While vocal minorities speaking of a silent majority are a thing, this change isn't coming out of nowhere, we are less than a year away from Return to Tarikir and creative likely did what they had done with Kamigawa with community respond and consultants ect. And for the most people and most metric wotc measure things, Kamigawa 2 is considered a huge success so make sense they likely did the same for Tarkir give there was aspect some people felt could have been done better (which is true for any plane they return too anyways).

And fair for fair I would except Lorwyn next year to also get a few consultants looking over it as a Celtic mythology plane (with the Fomori likely being connected in someway).

Rather late on this, but I'm rather sad we're losing cephalid and viashino. Those were core to MTG's fantasy identity.

We're not losing them, we are just losing a line text on their cards.

More overtly Red/White and less Blue than last time. Growth I guess: https://still-anchorage-15218.herokuapp.com

I was:
30% blue
~25% white
~25% green
A little red
A little less black.

I feel like I'm really more driven by white, but I identify tradition as a sort of social cancer, so that brought the score down.

Ugh, since US podcasts and general background noise was so election focused, I did a bit of a world build based off one of the US states. I've gotten it to a first pass, but, oy, researching some of the last bits of stuff I'm not as interested in is rough (like vehicles, architecture terms or fashion). There's no purpose for the world (was just a worldbuilding exercise), so I don't exactly know what to use it for. I had initially thought I'd make some other state based world (New York with an upstate/Erie Canal focus was next on the docket), but "finishing up" on this first one is a bit of a pain (in the sense of finishing up being world being ready to start to initially try to utilize for a wide range of medium).

Quoyenge, if anyone wants to see the slideshow exported as a pdf. Lots of references mentioned, but not directly linked
