I feel like Jund is more Gruul than Naya. Naya's too harmonious and "follow the herd" while the Gruul seem to like the more savage aspects of the wild. But maybe the Gruul would enjoy the calmness more if they weren't the marginalized guild pushed to the badlands and kind of forced to become more aggressive and militaristic.

Jund is full of dragons. The Gruul (and Garruk) probably hate dragons and would rather roam around with giant beasts. Plus they might new worship big things on Naya. Boborygmos would love it there.

Garruk seemed not to really pay attention when he was on Jund.
Actually more made a beeline to Grixis.

Community does seem like a big aspect of the Gruul Clans. Not an aspect that gets developed very often because the cards focus on conflict and the other Guilds oppress them, but I always felt it played a big part in understanding the Gruul.

Agreed, I think the Gruul could be a lot more peaceful and community oriented if they weren't in constant struggle with other guilds and if it wasn't for the plane sized city trying to claim their territory. Opposing civilisation is basically their role in the guildpact. And yeah, the battle oriented stuff we see on the cards isn't everything there is to them. You can even see a bit of that in Domri's origin story.

Luckily for Domri, Jund and Naya are on the same plane again, so he can literally pick the best of both worlds. Speaking of which, I would be totally down for Return to Alara.

I would give up playing control decks forever if it guaranteed a good return to Alara.

:D

I guess I would say the same about playing mono-black decks and getting a good return to Dominaria, but I'd happily take Alara until then. And I think the prospects of a return are pretty real. Alara was relatively popular, recently got a lot of love in C16 and both Ajani and Tezzeret feature prominently in the story these days. Creative seems to have decided to just ignore Test of Metal, which is great and means they won't let anything about that mess of a book get in the way either. And I think multicolour blocks happen slightly more frequently these days than they used to.

I don't just want a return to Alara, though. I want a good one. If they don't embrace the Conflux, I'd rather they just didn't bother.

You mean you want them to explore how the Shards have merged and influenced each other? Agreed, I would be disappointed if they rolled everything back and presented the former Shards as mostly separate. Showing the new status quo would be the main appeal of a return in my opinion.

Unfortunately, a return to Alara isn't in the cards.
While it is popular, they'd rather milk more popular settings and if we're talking gold, they'd rather chuck another Ravnica set at us, which is vexsome at the least.
Secondly, and I do sympathize with this point, Alara ate up HUGE swaths of design space both mechanically and creatively, far in excess of most planes.

They're unlikely to return outside side products.

Not that it means much, but MaRo did list Alara as a 4 on that unfortunate scale he made of planes they were likely to return to, with 1 being the most likely and 10 being a waste of time, energy, and brain cells to even consider the possibility:
MaRo wrote:
1 – Ravnica, Innistrad
2 – Zendikar
3 – Kaladesh, Theros
4 – Alara, Dominaria, Tarkir, Vryn
5 – Fiora, New Phyrexia (Mirrodin)
6 – Regatha
7 – Lorwyn/Shadowmoor, Shandalar
8 – Kamigawa, Segovia
9 – Mercadia, Rath, Serra’s Realm, Ulgrotha
10 – Rabiah

Omg, I just browsed Maro's tumblr and discovered that apparently he thinks Garruk joining the Gatewatch is a real possibility... We just need to take a deep breath and remind ourselves that Maro isn't in Creative. Then again, I'm not even sure it isn't the marketing department that's in charge of the story these days. Either way, I really didn't need Maro to reinforce my pessimism, thank you very much.

Stuff like that is why I avoid the Blogatog.

I only check it about every three months or so, but yeah, it's like some Lovecraftian book of madness that erodes all hope and sanity. :twitch:

I think you are over stating things. Almost everything people ask about on MaRo's Tumblr is a possibility to him. There could conceivable be a story line that such a thing could happen and make some semblance of sense. Will it actually happen? That depends on how they handle Garruk's story-line. If he is cured of his curse without being killed, and Liliana has a real "come to JaceJesus" moment and really apologizes for her role in said cursing (or maybe just dies to make room for a new black 'Walker to join), then maybe, just maybe....Garruk joining up wouldn't be that far fetched. Again, will it happen? Who cares! The people asking these kind of things on Blogatog are just fishing for "Maybe :)" as an answer because they know MaRo won't actually say one way or another.

I'd like to see Garruk just kill off Liliana's last demon just to get the Gatewatch's attention so that his curse would be removed. It would be hilarious.

Like imagine this dialogue: "hey lili I killed your last demon; you're welcome; now your soul is mine, and you can have it back if this **** PAINFUL CURSE gets off my **** A-WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON'T KNOW HOW TO GET RID OF IT?!?"

The more anticlimactic this would be, the better.

**** the Gatewatch. They need to be brought down a notch. Their style reminds me of Sonic Boom, and if I have the opportunity to, I'd employ Garruk to murder them. Horribly.

I'd fund it.

That said, the last time we saw Garruk, he didn't even want to be free of the curse anymore.

In my opinion, I think Garruk was just tired and didn't want to be constantly experimented upon. He might have found such treatment a serious cost to his dignity, and those that might know how to "treat" him could end up destroying him instead. Maybe being able to one-up the witch could be enough to convince him to get help, and make it important to find someone trustworthy to help.

Because when Garruk was talking to Jace about the curse, I think he was hiding the fact that he's still being weakened by it.
