And thus was it Cho-Manno's fate to have his image used for everything he stood against, marketed to the young and disaffected who couldn't yet realize the irony of the Mercadian textile industry profiting off their vaunted chief opponent of the depredations of Mercadian economy and commerce.

Of course Mercadia is America. It's rulers are cowardly, selfish capitalists aligned with the colour of war and opposite peace and intelligence.

I realized The Brother's War is a puffed up ripoff of Nine Princes in Amber. You plebs have probably never heard of it.

But I associated the "Cho-" thing with chi, and Manno with mana. I figured they wanted something that sounded holistic and natural to stand in opposition to the more industrious Mercadians (this sounds a lot like Mercantile/Merchant to me).

Yep. And the word "America" is not connected to "merchant" - it came from the name of one lucky guy, Amerigo Vespucci...

Come on ! Everyone who thinks in stereotypes knows that America = Mercantilism.
