Do you think Peter Mohrbacher's Angelarium would have made great card art:

I know he cut ties violently with Wizards, but lets imagine an alternate reality.

Most of those would probably go to Spirits or Avatars or such in the Multiverse.

I like that Azazel is your basic "human with wings". It fits the role of the Grigori.

Yes, I'd imagine most would end up as avatars.

I guess some can get bit more abstract than more MTG art is comfortable.

Why did he cut ties with WOTC? First I've heard of this, so I'm curious.

I love the artwork on stuff like Dakkon Blackblade, Ramses Overdark, Lightning Dragon, and most anything by Quinton Hoover. You don't see these styles much in the modern art. Ryan Barger and Ray Swanland are my favorite from the modern mtg artists.

More or less, Peter was getting less work from them than he was happy with and decided they paid crap in the first place and had a bit of a blow out as a result.

Added to that, he felt he wasn't allowed to fully express himself, with the focus on the style guides becoming more prevalent.

I can't blame him for taking his talents elsewhere, then. Style guides are great for theme, but I'm not gonna say no to a diversity of styles that tie into the plane's theme. It keeps everything from looking too samey.

I wonder if he has thought out an established setting for these angels, or if they're just random inspirational blurbs.

They're part of a specific story apparently.

MTG can accommodate a lot of art styles. These would fit, not everywhere, but certainly somewhere. Plus they're awesome.
