So, a long time ago, there was a contest put together to celebrate the alternate histories caused by the ripples of the rifts. Now, honestly, this is like one of my favorite thought exercises and even though it's a story, it's SOOOOOOO not meant for the M:EM. I put together like 4 stories for the project back then, and I continually go back to dig up what I'd done before. Well, I've come back to it again, and I think I'd like to spawn some discussion over it all. Totally just a cut loose sort of thing. I'm also thinking of dragging this remnant over to YMTC and seeing what they dream up based off the prompt.
Saint Vig, Selesnyan Prophet
Sunlight streamed down upon the gently swaying leaves of Vitu-Ghazi. The Crystals planted throughout the branches of the city tree captured the radiance of the day to be used each night. In the time since Momir Vig had joined the life song of Mat'Selesnya, this was but one of his brilliant creations. Vig stood upon the great terraced branches of the conclave's home and watched as the wind softly stirred the delicate green leaves that made up the enormous canopy. It was an excellent day to be alive, Vig thought to himself. His gaze wandered downwards to those scurrying below upon the streets and he momentarily frowned. There were too many that could not see the Conclave's vision, or even worse, chose not to. It was a shame.
The branches swayed momentarily and bathed the relaxing figure in a shaft of gold. Momir Vig was of average height for an elf, and unlike many of his elven compatriots, he was bald, a small genetic quirk from times immemorial. It was this quirk that made the brilliant emerald gem embedded in his forehead shine so much more prominently than any of the other chorus member's gems, their connection to the lifesong. Of course, those that followed his words would say it was his brilliance, or the light of Mat'Selesnya shining upon his brow. He chuckled silently to himself aand folded his hands behind him.
"Saint Vig?" A voice cut through Momir's thoughts and he looked around in mild surprise. There, a young man stood, a very young man. He could not have been more than ten or eleven.
"Yes my child? What may I do for you today?" Vig smiled beneficently at the child. The young one smiled back and held something up for Momir.
"You asked to be notified when the orzhov sorceress had located these texts for you." The young man waved the scroll back and forth in front of the elven master and he patiently waited until the child stopped before he plucked it from his small hands.
"So Mistress Lyzolda managed to find what I was looking for."
"Yes sir! She sent a courier over with all of it!" Vig chuckled once more at the boy's eagerness to please.
"It was a rhetorical question my lad. Very good though, You may go now. Be diligent in your studies." The beaming child took off down into the halls of Vitu Ghazi. After another moment of basking in the glow of sunlight, Saint Vig followed him. The child had Momir thinking of the decamillenia. The event that took place when that boy was but a babe. It was the year that Momir Vig had earned his title. When Szadek, it still stunned Momir that he truly existed, had provoked the demon Rakdos into rioting through the streets, it had seemed a grim time. So many injured had poured in through the living halls of this wooden haven. It seemed as if they would never stop. Momir Vig had ceased being a mere evangel at that point, he could do nothing to stop those in the streets, but he could heal those in his tree.
Momir Vig worked ceaselessly for ten days, resting but a mere few hours in that entire time before the Boros General Augustin had ordered the deployment of the spirit troops. They had driven back the demon and his hordes and the eternal Arbiter Razia and her Azorious angels had used the guildpact to seal Rix Maadi. Finally, the procession of injured had slowed to a trickle, and Vig collapsed from exhaustion soon after. Vig smiled at the memory, for it was then that the seeds of his great plan had been sown. In his exhaustive sleep, he had dreamed. A brilliant dream, one that had shaped the past ten years of his life. He dreamed of Mat'Selesnya, and she told him of the truth of the life song.
It was that truth which had caused him to go to the greatest and oldest magical minds of Ravnica. For ten years, he searched for those documents which now sat in his room thanks to Mistress Lyzolda. As he slipped into his room, a simple cell in the highest reaches of the tree, his eyes were immediately drawn to the stacked scrolls, all of them bearing Ozhov signets. Of course these were copies, the originals must be so old that they'd have turned to dust. With great reverence, he sat and broke the first seal, being careful and solemn. It was not everyday a man learned knowledge that predated the very guildpact.
Laid out before him, was the spell that had created Mat'selesnya herself, an elemental fusion of the first chorus of dryads. They had woven themselves together and gave birth to the life song and their sacrifice of individuality powered the guildpact. Everyone was tied to the guildpact through the life song. Soon though, if Vig's plans came to fruition, they would all be members of the conclave as well, compelled to hear the unity of the very aria of existence itself. The spells he researched now would free Mat'Selesnya and a new being would take her place. Vig considered a moment.
"A being with such a destiny deserves its own name. Something poetic, something... fitting." Yes, he rather liked that idea. He contemplated for a moment, before speaking aloud the old elvish name given new form. "Kraj'Selesnya. It has a certain ring to it, I think."
The Larger Picture:
The Azorius Senate
Razia, The Eternal Arbiter: Razia and her angels rule the courts of law and enforce the guildpact to all. From the Spires of Prahv, she sits and passes judgement on the people of the entire plane. Her angels, like she herself, wear mirrored masks, illustrating the ancient adage that justice is blind. Though she has ruled since the guildpact's inception, she held the Boros Commander Azor in such regard that she chose to name the senate after him.
Agrus Kos, High Judge: One of the eldest members of the senate, few have the experience or wisdom as Agrus Kos. He is considered by many the most reasonable and compassionate of the judges, but he has never compromised his ethics or reasoning in the name of sympathy.
The Izzet League
Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind: Ultimate ruler of the Izzet League and genius extraordinaire. (No change)
Isperia the Inspired: The second most brilliant member of the grand Izzet League and the most antagonistic member of the league. Unfortunately, her brilliance may yet rival that of the firemind and that simple fact has opened a schism in the once unified League. What she might be planning is a mystery to all but her... a fact that causes Niv-Mizzet to despise her all the more. Acting against her might ultimately cost Niv the hold he has on his guild.
The Dimir Syndicate
The Sisters of Stone Death: The ancient gorgon sisters who assassinated the parun of the guild. Each of the five sisters is said to run their own crew, a group further divided into cells. The true extent of the gorgon's reach is yet to be discovered, but the mystery of what they may be up to is terrifying when you realize the scale of their known capabilities
Teysa Karlov, Dimir Broker: One of the youngest and most power hungry members of the Dimir's public face, some believe that the depths of her knowledge, and things she is simply not supposed to know, make her a danger not only to her enemies, but possibly her allies as well. She is not the kind that will sit back and accept the implicit rule of another, and her dangerous behavior has branded her a rogue amongst the Dimir... a trait she may very well be encouraging.
House Orzhov
Szadek, Lord of Debt: The ancient vampire whose very existence had been raised to the point of deification, his sudden appearance at the decamillenia shocked the world and upset the delicate balance that the Guild of Deals had spent centuries weakening. The vampire feeds off the pure life of others, and everyone in the great Houses of the Orzhov owe at least a little of their life to the monster.
Lyzolda, Sorceress Pontiff: Szadek's most outspoken and devious priestess. She has spent nearly her entire life collecting from those around her, elevating her own position in glory to her ancient vampire god.
The Cult of Rakdos
Rakdos, The Defiler: No change. (Some of these guilds can't remove the parun from the name)
Borborygmos: The most powerful member of the Cult, the tremendous cyclops cannibal leads the revelry in celebration of his lord, but deep in his darkest heart, he hopes one day to rise and consume his lord to become the greatest tyrant and enjoy the festivities forever.
The Gruul Clans
Tolsimir Wolfblood: Born of the Ghor Clan, Tolsimir was raised by the wolves that would ensure his right to rule. With his pack at his side, he is unstoppable, and those that oppose him must face down the blooded fangs of his siblings. Under his leadership, the Ghor Clan at last overthrew the Burning Tree clan, and has claimed the leadership of all the clans.
Tibor and Lumia: The high shamans of the Burning Tree clan, this fierce married couple exemplifies everything that it means to be Gruul, from the terrible fires of rage that Lumia conjures to the wild heart that Tibor can call forth, they lead their clan as best they can.
The Golgari Swarm
The Lich Council of Korozda: The paruns of the guild, they are the unliving, undying authority, ruling from the darkest corners of Ravnica's undercity. Their numbers continue to swell, as do their armies, and each death assures them of a greater place in Ravnica.
The Corrupted Chorus: Long ago, the dryads of the corrupted chorus split from their peace loving sisters. They found the terrible addictions of the darkness and became slaves to that same dark impulse, embracing the shadows and what lies within.
The Simic Combine
Savra, Prodigy of the Simic: The most brilliant biomancer since Svogthir himself, she was taught at the master's knee, and each of the replacements he chose as he continually spliced more and more into himself. She has raised all his theories to a near art form, and the breakthroughs she has made just continue to prove her innovation and skill. The only member of the Combine seemingly unimpressed is her brother Jarad.
Ulasht the Progress Seed: Savra's penultimate project, the combination of a Hydra's growth, the generation of saprolings, and the ferocity of a Hellion, Savra has crafted a dreadful weapon of mass destruction. What she plans to do with it is unknown, but some say she has her sights set on ruling the guild itself.
The Boros Legion
Grand General Augustin: Though crippled in the terrible riots of years passed, Augustin is the most brilliant tactician the Boros has known since Azor himself.
Circu, Boros Interrogator: A hard man, Circu is known far and wide to be able to get information out of any perp. There's nobody that can hide a secret from his steely stare.
Feel free, if anyone wants, to expand on this and the implications there of. It's here for discussion after all. Thought exercises etc.
Return to Ravnica primer
Going forward, I assume the same casualties as in the regular universe. Honestly, all I know out of all of this is that I want Emmara as the Gruul Clan Leader. Her inexplicable strength has won her the terrible victories over creatures many times larger than she. The source of her power is unknown, but it is crushing. I'd also like to see Melek to be a Simic creation, typed Mutant instead of Weird. Half considered switching guilds around for the walkers.

So, dwelling on it all and the way the original Ravnica would have played out with its different players in place, Guildpact, I think, would have looked a little like this:
Spoiler
Agrus Kos retires from being a judge, disheartened by the missing symbol of justice that Razia and her angels presented. He just can't deal with it anymore, the uncertainty brought on by their disappearance following the decamillenial celebration, and moves to the far distant district of Utvara... and right into the waiting web of the information broker Teysa Karlov. Despite his rocky faith in the angels and the symbolism they represent, he still strongly believes in justice, and so, when she asks for his help in toppling the Sisters of Stone Death, the guildmasters of the Dimir Syndicate, it is everything he had spent his lie believing is right.
Teysa had managed to uncover the information that during their coup, two of the sisters died, a fact that they had spent centuries covering up, and that single chink in their armor is enough to allow her to exploit their plans. It so happens those plans revolve around the Cauldron, a Dimir funded project being used by Isperia to undermine Niv-Mizzet's rule in his own guild. Joining them is the Selesnyan Ledev named Vor Golozar, a man used to justice out in the wild highways, and the Gruul goblin Crix. The group manage to foil Isperia's plan, but are forced to split up, and Teysa takes Kos along with her to finally unseat the sisters... but after the fact, and with Teysa's new position as Guildmistress of the Dimir in hand, she regretfully ends Kos's life. The Judge simply knew too much... and she had such plans for the future.
She returns his body to the group, telling them that while they were successful, it had cost Kos his life. He was a scholar more than a man of action, and she couldn't have saved him. He is celebrated as a hero in the halls of Prahv for doing what no Azorius judge had done in millenia. Strike a real blow against the Dimir. Teysa's own machinations begin to whir, but the sudden reappearance of the angels could throw all her careful planning to the wind.
And a set up for Dragon's Maze
Spoiler
After Niv's battle with the Nephilim, he retreated, severing all ties with his guild... and providing Isperia with the chance she had been plotting for. When Niv returns, he finds his once iron rule completely subverted, the Izzet League in turmoil and Isperia sitting upon his throne. In their time of need, while he had been off tending his vanity, she had seized power and to consolidate it, she began the massive project to discover what is at the heart of the Boros Maze. The dragon's only hope to regain what was stolen from him is to employ his own, much diminished forces to uncovering the secret first.
But can he trust the most brilliant of his mages to do as he says? Domri Rade is a prodigy unlike any other, but he has the capricious loyalty of a child and it might cost Niv-Mizzet more to place his trust in the hands of the genius whelp.

So how does the revelation that Azor was a planeswalker affect your original scheme? Does it still make sense for him to play second fiddle to Razia?
He's NOT a planeswalker. He's just NOT native to the plane. But lots of people weren't.
And in this scenario, Azor was Boros. The Azorius was named such out of respect.

Rurik thar should be izzet, because two heads are better than one, right?
Not really any space what with both Isperia and Niv still hanging around in the Izzet. It also sort of works with the parallels of the maze runner being Domri in the same vein Ral became the guild runner. Ruric-Thar is a bit of a hard placement, but in my head, I think he'd make for a good Boros Commander. I mean, he has experience as a commander with the Gruul, and I think the two heads as master tacticians makes for an interesting paradigm...
Needless to say, I think Mirko Vosk would take up the mantle of demiurge in the Orzhov after Szadek's fall.
The biggest problems I have in placing people are Varolz, Zegana, and Lazav.

You could fix the problems of Niv and Rakdos by simply switching the guild names. The Cult of Izzet, formed for the entertainment of it's narcissistic, worship-craving Dragon lord, would work fine.
The Rakdos League would be trickier, and would require some major rewriting of the Parun. Changing him into a Efreet/Djinn hybrid would work for the guild, though...
Now that this poll is officially over, it's time to congratulate Aaarrrgh for designing Hill, which has been decided by popular vote to be the Card of the Month for October 2013!
Zegana at least would seem interesting as Golgari.
Eh, since she's a merfolk, that basically limits her to being a permutation of one of the blue guilds and since the Simic is already getting kicked out and the Izzet are full, that just leaves the Dimir or the Azorius.

Honestly, I think that would just be more forced than leaving them where they are and twisting everything around them.
So, for RtR Boros, what do people think of Guildleader Ruric Thar and Champion Lavinia?

Well, it is an underground ocean, so it is somewhat possible to rationalise Ravnica merfolk as aligned with Black mana instead, though if nothing else a Dimir take on the character would be interesting.

In all due honesty Lavinia was already very "Boros-ish", so yes.
Okay, so the layout for the RtR allegiances could be:
Spoiler
Izzet: Niv-Mizzet Isperia Domri Rade
Gruul: Emmara Tandris Vorel
Simic: Jarad Melek (as a creation of Jarad's)
Boros: Ruric Thar Lavinia
Dimir: Teysa Zegana
Rakdos: Rakdos Borborygmos
Orzhov: Mirko Vosk Exava (I guess)
Azorius: Aurelia
Golgari: Lich Council of Korozda

Holy necromancy Batman! I've dragged this back up because... well, I keep coming back to it. It's a thought exercise that is just damned fun to do.
However, after looking at my list, then and now, I've decided the previous one didn't have enough structure. So I decided to approach it with a few new rules. 1) No two members switch to the same guild from the same generation. 2) Switches have to be only one step removed. 3) Characteristic and icon have to adhere to their norms.
With that in mind, I decided to make another go of finding out where everyone fit.
The Larger Picture:
The Boros Senate
Razia, The Supreme Arbiter: Razia and her angels rule the courts of law, not as judges, but as living embodiments of the principles of law. Above all else, they enforce the guildpact to the letter. From the Spires of Prahv, Razia sits and passes judgement on the people of the entire plane as the Supreme Arbiter of the Boros courts. Her angels, like she herself, wear mirrored masks, as an example of the ancient adage that justice is blind.
Teysa, Boros Senator: A young prodigy from a wealthy family, above all else, Teysa believed in the insoluble power of the law. With her prodigious wealth, she sought the most thorough education she could, quickly becoming one of the most sought after advokists in any of Ravnica's courts. However, such accomplishments weren't Teysa's endgoals, and using her fame and quick wits, she quickly found herself one of the youngest senators to ever join the lawmakers of the Boros Council.
The Izzet Clans
Niv-Mizzet, the Fireblooded: The ultimate embodiment of ferocity on Ravnica, Niv-Mizzet is the most savage creature to have ever lived. Possessed of a bestial cunning, his true ability lies in his unfathomable strength, a power so great that he almost single-handedly hunted the rest of his species to near extinction, proving he had no rivals to his might. In veneration of this terrible and awesome beast, the Clans of the Izzet have followed in his savage example.
Tolsimir Wolfblood: Born of the Ghor Clan, Tolsimir was raised by the wolves that would ensure his right to command his clan. With his pack at his side, he is unstoppable, and those that oppose him must face down the blooded fangs of his siblings. Under his leadership, the Ghor Clan at last overthrew the Burning Tree clan, and has claimed the stewardship of all the clans.
The Isperian League
Isperia the Inspired: The most brilliant member of the grand scientific guild she founded, Isperia has contemplated many mysteries in her day, but the mere workings of the mortal laws barely even tempt her thoughts. She has moved well beyond into the realms of the metaphysical mysteries present in the world's fundamental laws, the very nature of existence and the way it can be manipulated via magic and alchemy. In her footsteps has sprung a prolific scientific endeavor that seeks to glean from her wisdom. For her part, she barely notices the myriad lab assistants and countless subjects that take part in her grand hypothesis. It is up to the little beings to keep up, not for her to slow down to their level.
Lyzolda, Archmagus: The singularly most gifted of any of Isperia's "apprentices", Lyzolda has gained an enormous advantage in working with the manipulation of aether itself. Her theorems and tests have allowed her to rocket to the top of the guild, assuring funding and unlimited resources to pursue her scientific studies, however her methods have been called into question repeatedly when, in joint experiments, many of her biggest rivals suffered catastrophic accidents. With such detractors removed, it has made her, ostensibly, the head of the guild's daily operation in Isperia's aloof shadow.
The Rakdos Syndicate
Rakdos, the Lord of Secrets: Demons trade in secrets, it is a fact of life, it is a fact of death. No demon, however, has as great a spy network or ambition as the grand master of Duskmantle. His demonic machinations have been slowly pieced together and orchestrated from the shadows for over 10,000 years. There are likely no secrets that elude Rakdos's reach, thanks in no small part not just to his agents in the guild of secrets, but to the billions of eyes and ears of his rats. Some may think him less than glorious, but few ever think to watch their words in front of the simplest rodents. With every word spoken, Rakdos's power grows...
The Sisters of Stone Death: The ancient gorgon sisters who assassinated their way to their position in the guild. Each of the five sisters is said to run their own crew, a group further divided into cells. The true extent of the gorgon's reach is yet to be discovered, but the mystery of what they may be up to is terrifying when you realize the scale of their known capabilities and the ultimate fate of those poor fools that cross them.
House Orzhov
Szadek, Lord of Debt: An ancient vampire whose very existence had been raised to the point of deification, his sudden appearance at the decamillenia shocked the world and upset the delicate balance that the Guild of Deals had spent centuries weakening. The vampire feeds off the pure life of others, and everyone in the great Houses of the Orzhov owe at least a little of their life to the monster. Despite the horrendous things he has done, he is a staunch believer in the Guildpact, if for nothing else in that it allows him to continue to enslave and feed upon the masses of his pious legions.
The Chorus of the Orzhov: The Chorus of the Orzhov is the voice of Szadek made manifest, the hive mind carriers of his scripture to the masses. Once living creatures, nobody now knows what these spirits were, only that they speak as one, their voices ringing with the glory of unity and devotion, the sort of pacifying unity that comes only from debt to your betters.
The Cult of Gruul
Borborygmos: The most powerful member of the Cult, the tremendous cyclops cannibal leads the revelry in near constant celebration of the horrendous things the cult has done. Founded by Cisarzim in the earliest days of the guildpact, the Cult of the Gruul has only ever been about one thing. The strongest survive and the weak are trampled beneath. It is, however, not just a fact, but a brutal celebration of tyranny for no other sake than tyranny itself it would seem. Each successive generation of cultist has proven that much wilder and that much awful, and even the strongest will one day fall into the gullets of the stronger still. Until that day, though, Borborygmos intends to enjoy his near perpetual feast...
Circu, Gruul Gourmand: It isn't just about eating, it is the way you eat that is important. None are as skilled at flaying and preparing the weak and decrepit as Circu is. A veritable star of the guild, his finest talent isn't even the masterful way he creates dishes, but the stomach turning necromancy he uses on the leftovers.
The Golgari Swarm
The Lich Council of Korozda: The paruns of the guild, they are the unliving, undying authority, ruling the vast sewer tunnels and sludge rivers from the darkest corners of Ravnica's undercity. Their numbers continue to swell, as do their armies, and each death assures them of a greater place in Ravnica.
Kraj: Not satisfied with the slow acquisition of zombie soldiers, the Lich Council turned to the accumulation of millennia's worth of death and rot. Using the foulest necromancies ever conjured, they formed the unliving ooze known of Kraj, the putrid slimy remains of literally thousands of years worth of congealed corpses. The size and power of such a thing is staggering, and the only thing keeping the results of their secret rituals from bursting onto the surface is the sheer size of it.
The Simic Combine
Savra, Prodigy of the Simic: The most brilliant biomancer since Svogthir himself, she was taught at the master's knee, and each of the replacement knees he chose as he continually spliced more and more into himself. She has raised all his theories to a near art form, and the breakthroughs she has made just continue to prove her innovation and skill. The only member of the Combine seemingly unimpressed is her brother Jarad. who believes a more hands on approach is the only way to really make breakthroughs.
The Azorius Legion
Grand General Augustin: Though crippled in the terrible riots of years passed, Augustin is the most brilliant tactician the Boros has known since Azor himself. Despite being confined to desk duty, he has nevertheless, orchestrated some of the best defenses against hostile actions the city of Ravnica has ever seen. Ultimately, he is driven by a deep sense of duty to protect the people of Ravnica, even from themselves.
Tibor and Lumia: The famous husband and wife team of wojeks, they've taken down some of the biggest crimerings and lawbreakers in any district. Despite the success, they prefer to stay on the beat, turning down multiple promotions simply because it means they get to keep working with one another. While Tibor is a gifted investigator, Lumia is the one that packs the substantial firepower that usually gets them out of a situation that his deductions put them in.
Feel free, if anyone wants, to expand on this or discuss the changes and how they might have potentially impacted the story. It's here for discussion after all.
I'm sure I'll make a stab at doing the Return to Ravnica stuff, though I'll probably follow through on some of the changes made, other places might end up having some different results. I'm going to consider where the various characters end up while also trying to reconcile who survives until the end as well.

Nice writeup. I wouldn't really prioritize RTR; this reader's got a take it or leave it relationship with the Return material. Is your Duskmantle still a guildhall that "doesn't exist?"
