Tut actually has an interesting place in history thanks to his father Akhenaten. Akhenaten basically invented religious intolerance -- before him human society tended towards treatments of other faiths more in line with Henotheism or Monoaltrism (You had your favored god(s) but generally accepted that the other guys had different faves/takes on the universe, limiting cross-faith conflict primarily to "Smug superiority from both sides".) Akhenaten instituted a new state theology for Egypt that taught that only Aten was a true deitiy, all others were false, their worship to be banned. Of course, he was also himself Aten so that worked out. Akhenaten's rule was big on the persecution. When Tutankhaten, his son, took over he brought back the old priests and practices and basically had dear old dad written out of history, his name chiseled off monuments wherever it could be found (A HUGE thing for ancient egyptian theology) and his statues smashed and used as wall-filler for new monuments and temples. He even changed his name to Tutankhamun, paying honor to one of the restored gods rather than the Aten. His reign was pretty short (9 years) because he died very young, but his successors carried on the work of making Egyptian theology great again and attempting to make the univers forget Akhenaten had ever existed (with, as is plainly apparent, incomplete success. turns out we can piece together text on broken monument bits conveinently encased in walls as "fill"). Akhenaten's little social experiment is thought to have had lasting consequences, though: some scholars even think that proto-Judaism among the slaves and lower classes of Egypt may have been a survival of Atenism
