Uh, it totally is. Duh.

Allow me to qualify my ludicrous **** for once: despite my fairly prolific posting I haven't actually played MtG for years, but I'm hoping that'll change this Friday when I go to a Modern FNM at a local club. I am very very underequipped - I don't even have basic stuff like Lightning Bolts - but this particular event is intended for kids and noobs such as myself so hopefully it won't be too bad. I bought a copy of the Landslide Charge event deck while I was checking out the place so I'll have a little more than nothing to go on (I linked to that site because it has a deck list you can actually mouse over). Obviously that's a Standard deck, and I'm still expecting to get my ass kicked, but hopefully I can make it sting a little before I go down. And since I happen to have a copy of Bear Umbra, I was wondering if I should replace the Crusher. Basically. Basically.

Another question could be if I should replace Mogis's Warhound with Thornweald Archer. Because the Hound doesn't look great but it might work better in the deck.

do you know anyone who's going? 'cause it's probably better to borrow a deck from a friend than play a fake standard deck in a modern event. anyway I think the crusher's probably better. the archer is probably better than the hound.

Neither card is better because they are both irrelevant and don't occupy the same space other than mana costs.

I think just play whatever and not be too concerned.

Borrowing a deck from a friend will probably just piss the friend off. Just do some research and/or figure out what kind of deck you'd like to pilot and build it. Take the lead and take charge of your own fun. Also, don't be afraid of losing. Playing the game is playing game, whether you did well or not.

Sorry, I've had bad experiences with "borrowing" and friends when it comes to Magic. From my experience, my advice to anyone is to stick to playing with cards that you own, and making sure your friends do the same.

Polis Crusher. Umbra can get you blown out by removal in response, or by exile based removal. Also, cut stubborn denial.

I would borrow a deck if I could, but I don't have anyone to borrow from. I'm going into this completely... naked? Metaphorically.

that sounds like a problem with having bad friends, not with borrowing decks. 90% of my non-Limited Magic playing has been with decks other people own, including at tournaments, and I've never had a problem.

You can turn a good friend into a bad friend by making certain choices that might compromise that friendship. Like making a habit of borrowing decks when you could have just made your own.

nah razorborne's talking about really good friends. The type of friends that would give you their first born son if you asked for it without needing an explanation. The type of friends that would gladly lay down their lives in proclamation of your holy name. Those types of friends are forever.

I did my thesis on razorborne's friends so I think I speak with some authority when I say

Borrowing decks is an entirely acceptable thing to do in many circles, and if your "friends" have a problem with it, then you probably need to get better friends.

Competitive modern decks are actually in "hundreds of dollars" range with a few exceptions. You probably need to do some research.

here's a random Modern Tezzerator list from TCG player that they estimate costs about $400. here's an RDW for $200. this Splinter Twin deck is... holy **** $1200. good cards are expensive, old cards are expensive, Modern relies on very good old cards.

what, specifically, do you fear would happen to your deck if you lent it to a friend for a day? what negative impact would that have on your life?
