Season 4 has begun! Welcome back to 3 Card Magic, the most minimalist Magic format in the world! What's 3CM? The basic concept is simple: make a deck consisting of any three Magic cards, and try to beat all the other decks! If you're new here, you should start by reading the 3CM Primer. Deck submissions can be PM'd to me here or emailed to [email protected]. The Rules Deckbuilding Each player creates a deck of three Magic cards following the banned list, and any additional restrictions imposed by the current format. (See Round Types below.) Decks are submitted to me via private message entitled "3cm Round #". My deck is finalized before reading these PMs; if you'd like me to send you a verification PM with my list in it, just ask. You may update your decklist up until the deadline. (Unless you've asked me to share my list with you.) If you send me a deck that can't win against a deck with three blank cards, I'll ask you to confirm that you're aware of this fact. This rule exists to prevent people from accidentally submitting decks that don't work, while still allowing Karn Liberated decks and other such shenanigans. Gameplay After the round is closed, each deck plays against each other deck twice, once going first and once going second. Normal Magic rules apply to a game of 3CM, except for the following exceptions. Players don't lose the game for drawing from an empty library. If the original source of a random effect (i.e. coinflip) comes from one player's deck, the other player chooses its outcome. Exception: If a player is able to cause a random event to occur an arbitrarily-large number of times, then it is assumed that every possible outcome occurs an arbitrarily-large number of times (e.g. infinite coinflips result in infinite heads and infinite tails, basically). Effects that get cards from outside the game (Wishes, Research // Development, Ring of Ma'ruf) cannot be used to find anything. Games are played with the contents of both decks known to each player at all times. Players will always play optimally and to win. Scoring When the round is closed, a spreadsheet of all the decks and matchups is posted, to be filled in by the players. Players are encouraged to double-check the matchups graded by other players, since mistakes are often made when complicated decks are involved. A win is worth 3 points, a draw is 1 point, and a loss is 0 points. Round Types A season consists of four rounds: two vanilla and two alternate formats. Vanilla: These rounds follow normal rules, but have a banned list that changes every season. Alternate Formats: These rounds use special rules that might effect deckbuilding, gameplay, or both! Fabulous Prizes At the end of the season, the following prizes are awarded! Consolation Prizes: The lowest-scoring player of each Vanilla round picks one card to add to the next season's Vanilla banned list. Grand Prizes: The top-scoring players of the entire season each get to make some number of changes to the Vanilla banned list, based on their rank. Each change allows that player to either add a card or remove a card. First place gets three changes, second place gets two, and third place gets one. Alternate Format Prizes: The winner of each Alternate Format round may suggest an alternate format (in either category) to be put on the poll next season. Tiebreakers 1. Head-to-head: Whoever has the most points from games against other the other tied player(s) wins the tie. 2. Match-Wins: Whoever won the most games wins the tie. (Ignore draws.) Since I like to keep the first post clean, I'm planning on putting season introductions here, in the second post. Welcome, everybody! I'm very excited to introduce 3CM Season 3, the first season to follow this new four-week schedule! If you're a returning player, here's a quick rundown of what's changed: 1. Each season will begin with two identical Vanilla rounds, followed by an upside format, then a downside format. 2. The Vanilla banned list has been reset for this season, so it's currently identical to the alternate format banned list. 3. Rounds now begin on Thursdays and end on Wednesdays. 4. The prize structure has changed quite a bit, so I'll copy it here for everybody to see. Fabulous Prizes At the end of the season, the following prizes are awarded! I think they were alt-banned because they kept making alt formats dumb by being relatively insane decks that discouraged actually looking at the format, and then when Jim synced the alt and vanilla lists they hopped the fence. I think it's probably best anyway, especially Isle, if we're trying to get new players, 'cause that deck is as unintuitive and weird as it is way too strong.

I know, I was there when that deck was discovered. I still get a slight headache from it. Strongly considering paying homage to Vektor. I hope everyone is prepared for the Oncoming Storm, just in case.

Hello, I just wanted to say that I registered to these forums so I could partake in your 3CM game which I've been following for several months. I was too nervous to jump into any of the rounds, but seeing as how things are starting over with a blank slate I thought I could join in. You've certainly managed to create a vibrant 3CM game going, which I was thankful enough to stumble upon. I wish everyone the best of luck and look forward to partaking in this season. ~Zuty

I was guessing that mjack was including himself among the protestors as well. After all, he's no lurker, he was protesting things in that metaboard thread, and he has admitted to already submitting this round. I'm still not sure how Dr_D, serene, and Lilan qualify as either lurkers or protestors though. They all seem like active community members who were not weekly participants while the last season was in its dying weeks. It looks to me the only 'lurker' (which is often how people start out - I was a lurker once) is Zuty. I've put up the notification that there's a fresh new season with a higher forecast participant count in my thread at boardgamegeek. Hopefully that'll at least pull logopolys back in, and maybe some fresh blood that, like Zuty, was hesitant about diving in deep in the gargantuan last season as well. CJ, do keep a periodic eye on [email protected], will you?
