After the D&D set was a disappointment WOTC said they wouldn't make that sort of thing standard legal again.
Then the Lord Of The Rings set was pretty awesome and everybody thought it would have been great in standard. (It helps that nobody liked the standard of the time)
Now we're getting a universes beyond in standard and it's... Spiderman? Wow, Spidey's way more of a stretch than either of the last two.

Where did you see that it was a disappointment? Especially after they followed it with the Baldur's Gate set.

I thought everybody hated it? Just in my personal experience, everyone was meh at best on it. I never heard WOTC's official stance on the D&D set, but they promised not to make nonMTG properties standard legal after it came out. From there I assumed the set didn't meet expectations.

They sure did.

You know, there was a time when there was a promise not to make Mythic Rare a tier for arbitrarily overpowered cards. And when it was first broken, people noticed, and didn't like it, and there was an entire webcomic called Lotus Cobra is Evil shining light on the idea that a generic, super simple and unimpactful but hyperefficient mythic is egregious.

There was a time Sol Ring was on a reserved list. The reserved list was never abolished, but apparently some cards were excluded from it. I am all in favor of abolishing it btw, but no apparently we can't do that because it's a sacred promise but we can remove cards from it because yeah.

What is a promise, really? Do words of a promise hold any meaning unless the decision-making algorithm of the entity uttering those words can be inspected and found to be stably functioning in such a way as to have no way to easily deviate from it, like how liberal democracies with strong rule of law have no easy way to deviate from constitutional promises to population; or unless the entity being promised something has a capacity to remember and rationally and legibly react to breaches of promise, to defect back at the defector in a way that is distinguishable from noise?
