Hey, I was interested in getting into mtg but i'm not entirely sure whats the best way to get started? I was planning on going to an open house but it seems thats not going to happen due to lack of transportation. Any advice, I don't particularly want to go into a fnm and have no idea how to build a deck and barely know the basics. Thanks!

My advice would be: With a preconstructed deck. Which kind you get depends on who you mean to be playing with. If you don't know anyone and it's just looking for locals, any one will do. If you do have at least a friend of a friend, find out what format they play. If it's Commander (also called EDH) you want a Commander deck; otherwise you probably want one of the Planeswalker decks released with any set. At the VERY basic level most shops affiliated with Wizards are given a number of half-sized trial decks that they're supposed to hand out to prospective players, and those are very similar to the product I... didn't start with (it came out about a year after I bought my first cards), but learned on: an intro set that had two mini-decks I could play against each other myself as a puzzle to work out the interactions.

A Commander preconstructed deck will be kind of alright for its format; a regular preconstructed deck will be pretty poor on its own. This is why I generally recommend Commander precons and not others, but being at the very first level of learning changes that equation. In any case, they share one thing in common: they have the structure of a good deck of their type, with some consideration for theme. The ratio of lands to nonlands and creatures to noncreatures will be okay, so in either case you can progress and learn the game without worrying about whether you're screwing yourself on a deep, core level; if you replace cards in your precon 1 for 1 with similar but better cards over time, the deck will run better. With this in hand you can play with people and sort of get a feel for the flow of the game and what gameplay decisions work. And if you want to build an entirely different deck from scratch early, you can probably use the precon as a template, knowing "I want about this many lands, this many spells that mess with enemy creatures, this many spells that give me advantage, this many cards that are cheap to cast, this many cards that are a lot of mana to cast..." and so on. And you'll be somewhere close enough that you could re-skew the result based on how it feels in play, since its easier to diagnose why a deck isn't working if the problem is smaller. "My opponent always gets out of control"? Add more kill spells. "I can't play my cards fast enough" remove some expensive cards for cheaper ones. "I can't play my cards on time" you need more land. And so on.

The next level of thing you want to do is ask questions. I (or most other veteran players) could talk your ear off about important choices and concepts in deckbuilding, play, or both, and most are fairly willing to do so. I put this second, because we (the nebulous hive mind of all Magic players) can help you more if you have better and more specific questions. That said, don't be afraid to ask about the very general things too if you're having trouble.

But I'll actually say, for learning purposes, it's best not to buy in until you get the basics down. Pretty much any given magic player would likely be willing to lend you a deck to learn with and go through it with you.

Start by playing Vintage. It is the purest format. Knowing how to play with the best cards will make it easy to play with today's bad cards!
