About this:
To celebrate 30 years of Magic: The Gathering, we knew we had to go big. We had to create an experience for fans new and old that would be worthy of three decades of the original trading card game. We wanted a collectible, commemorative, jaw-dropping, mind-blowing thing that would cement itself in our collective memories as we look toward the next 30 years of Magic.

Enter 30th Anniversary Edition.

https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/a ... ry-edition

You get 4 randomized packs of nonlegal tournament legal proxies of beta set with 6 cards deleted from it (so you can't ever truly complete a full set of beta). The packs contain 15 cards each, technically 13 sorta since two basic lands, 3 uncommons, seven commons, and one rare. The chances of getting dual lands has been doubled. They have the modern frame with old art.

The cost of this product is 999$ so around thousand bucks.

Somebody made a simulator so people can check out what they might get roughly: https://www.mtgboxsim.com/set/30a/display

I predict:
1) This will not, actually, sell well. Everyone is somehow simultaneously convinced that this product is incredibly overpriced and has no audience, and that it will sell out like hot pies. Well, that's not how markets work. It might form a short-lived bubble but even that seems unlikely.
2) Conditional on 1, WotC will reprint the Reserved List in tournament-legal versions in the next 20 years.

Making moves that look incredibly greedy doesn't actually guarantee success at making money.
Breaking some informal taboos as a form of escalation (mechanics like Dungeons and Companions, thematically alien worlds like Kamigawa Neon Dynasty (it being incredible and amazing doesn't undermine the point) random crossovers, legal un-cards) has no reason to stop at an informal promise made years ago under a different ownership.

Link for comparison: I don't know how much 30 years of inflation would actually affect the current pricing, but jumping from $49.99 to $999.99 for almost the same exact product is ridiculous, and seems more like a desperate compromise between appeasing collectors and providing a product than an effective marketing strategy.

In fact, I actually don't see any immediate value in offering this product; it even seems like it be more detrimental to the reputation of the company as a whole.

Ok, I have to say that's nowhere near the same product in terms of how it's been sold here - this is much, much egregious by comparison than merely increasing the price.

Quote:
"Each set was sold in a collector's box with 363 cards."
...
"It contained 363 cards, including one of each of the 302 different cards of Beta, with multiple land cards making up the difference."
That's what you were paying 50 bucks for back then - a full frigging set.

Here you get 4 randomized booster packs: 60 cards of which 8 are basic lands guaranteed. You might not even get a whiff of power or anything else remarkable. With a single thousand bucks purchase, you'll prolly get few duals (since the appearance rate of those was doubled) and like a Kudzu and Blessing as the rest of your rares (actually what I got from the simulator).

Here are couple of simulators to get a sense what that 1000$ (1100 with taxes prolly) might get you:

If you wanted a full set of beta with this, you might be spending around, idk, I think I heard the sum of "around 200 000 $" (200 thousand) floating around. Also, it's worth noting that you will technically never get a full set of beta since 6 cards (Contract from Below, Darkpact, Demonic Attorney, Earthbind, Weakness, Crusade) have been blacklisted/pulled/removed completely and you won't be getting those from packs (which were in the original Collector's edition).

So we're talking more like a price jump from 50 $ to around 200 0000 $ or something (which would be an increase of 399900%) - don't quote me on that though since I haven't double checked the number I might be misremember but since you're pulling this out in packs of 4 boosters the actual sum isn't exactly a known number anyway but rather an average. One of those simulators does allow for "pull until all Rares collected" and that does seem to average around 200k, like $184815 and $206793 so I think it might be roughly correct.

... and we're still talking about nontournament legal proxies here.

One of WotC's dumbest releases, and that's saying a lot.

I doubt they're going to be holding much inventory, though, so it costs them very little to attempt to go whaling. Unfortunately.

Little known fact: for the price of one box of four 30th Anniversary Edition MTG boosters, you can actually buy 100 Calculator applications for Nintendo Switch

So each instance of the app is $10? For something that is typically included with any operating system for PC and/or mobile devices, and that probably has a browser-based application somewhere?

... guess both things prove if you have the revenue already, you don't rely as much on making profit for whaling.

Prices of Earthbind's alpha versions are fluctuating highly / spiking currently due to being omitted here. Jumps from like ~100$ to more than 300$ - I've seen some sites pricing it at 900+ $ xD

There are talks about how it could end up being (or is currently) the most expensive common card in MTG. Streisand effect going strong :tantrum:

I am considerably worried that Earthbind and Gwendlyn will get the memory hole treatment if people keep talking about them like this

Actually, thinking positively is a good thing. Is that right?
