You'd expect the black one to destroy creatures and the red one to destroy lands. But nope. What's with that?

Flavor, and oldness. Also the kicker is what is causing the destruction so the main creature color is irrelevant.

The effect is there even without the kicker. The kicker just changes it from one-sided (hurting only you) to symmetrical.

I do agree that having those effects switched would make more sense.
