Magic is gonna get an MMO

It's probably gonna suck and MMOs are a dead genre anyway

It's going to be pure cancer, and then discontinued in three years.

ehhh I give it a 50/50 really.

Cryptic is the studio that made City of Heroes, and that was a awesome superhero MMO that was canceled by the parent company at literally the worst possible time since the parent company, ncsoft, has no idea of catering to western tastes. Then the marvel cinematic universe started and they didn't/couldn't backpedal without loosing face.

On the gripping hand the guy that head developed city of heroes also left city to create champions online. Which as we all know wasn't nor still is that good. Champions was his dream project as well.

If Hasbro/WOTC don't set to many unreasonable goals, and they get a reasonable design team to go along with, it could be decent. Admittedly hopefully they don't insist on doing what they did to the old MTG motherboard and just abuse and ignore it.

Magic actually isn't the worst property to make an MMO out of. I'm sceptical of its long-term viability but we'll see how this thing shakes out.

AAA games suck

I think the D&D Online MMO game is considered okay? But the problem is that MMOs aren't really a relevant genre anymore.

It'll be kinda funny when you have like thousands of planeswalkers running around, taking quests from Jace on Ravnica to clear the sewers of Vraska's kraul insurgents, then portal hopping to Amonkhet to do a raid on Nicol Bolas, then doing the special event to witness the annual transformation of Lorwyn into Shadowmoor.

MMOs are pretty silly I think, but I'm willing to give this one a try if they don't force the subscription model.

Mmos are very relevant, mmorpgs less in recent years but there are other types of massive games.

I'm getting the feeling this is going to ultimately be written off as a loss. I just hope the game doesn't end up being too heavy a money pit.

I know it's been a while, but the Magic movie is still being worked on. Given today's Hollywood climate, it'd be silly to assume that whatever movie company has it wouldn't be trying to make a whole cinematic universe out of an IP that is all about exploring strange new worlds with an interconnected story-line and a slightly rotating cast. Like, instead of trying to force one out of old monster movies or trying to tie together various car-chase movies together, this property is actually built to support a cinematic universe. The question is, will it make enough money to be worth the first few that will get made (regardless of quality).

I'm gonna laugh if they end up messing with the story-line and the hardcore story line fans cry, while the rest of the fans just go on with their lives

I also find it very funny when companies make products of subpar quality for franchises I am invested in, because I love to spite others at the expense of my own potential enjoyment and reward WotC for doing a poor job.

Not for nothing, but one of the high muckety-mucks at Cryptic is Stephen D’Angelo, the founder and long-time editor of Crystal Keep and a major driving force behind the 6th Edition rules. So there are at least some of the right people adjacent to this project.

Also, Star Trek Online isn't terrible and Neverwinter was pretty good.

On the other hand, ugh not another MMO. So [shrug].

I typed part of a reply and then I deleted it because I don't really care. I want to like MMORPG's, but they never manage to be better than mediocre.

Well...no matter what happens The moment it becomes popular it will suck

No. Say, I like Star Wars, and both popular 4-6 and unpopular 1-3 parts alike. (yes even 2)
But when something is made to be popular (and not for any other reason) it is 95% doomed to be bad.
From what I heard, MTG's rules were made in a single day by two people.
From what I heard, MTG is still designed by enthusiasts, even while it's owned by Hasbro.

MTG's rules were not made by two people and definitely not in a single day. Its popularity was a combination of excellent design and being in the right place at the right time.

In contrast, a game like Farmville or Call of Duty absolutely is designed to be popular. And they are, because their designers know exactly how to hook their playerbase, and they have the funding and marketing to back it up.
