Welcome to 3 Card Magic, the world's best minimalist Magic format! What's 3CM? The basic concept is simple: make a deck consisting of any three Magic cards, and try to beat all the other decks! If you're new here, you should start by reading the 3CM Primer. Deck submissions should be PM'd to me, CommanderJim, or emailed to [email protected].

Welcome back to 3CM! Since last season's intro post was so silly, I'm going to switch it up this week and just talk about what actually happened. Last season we were all visited by the spooky Black Lotus. This artifact is very polarizing in 3CM because of its ability to single-handedly change the entire metagame, enabling expensive plays on your first turn. It was certainly a popular choice in the first round of Vanilla, but it was also met with some hate in the form of Disrupting Shoal. In the end, my double Hangarback Walker deck won the round by just being incredibly hard to stop in any way. In the Vanilla Redux, the Lotus hate basically disappeared, which worked out well for my Lotus, Lotus, Inferno Titan deck, but it was Golgari_Spy's Elspeth, Sun's Champion deck that came out on top. Never underestimate the power of tokens in 3CM. Our next round was Conspiracy, where players augmented their decks with conspiracies like Brago's Favor and Double Stroke. My favorite decks from the round were the ones that used Weight Advantage to turn their Memnites or Dragon's Eye Savants into deadly beaters. In the end, though, I won again with a reanimator deck, combining Brago's Favor with Unburial Rites and Lion's Eye Diamond to immediately put an Iona, Shield of Emeria onto the battlefield. This shut down a lot of decks on the play, and on the draw, a 7/7 flyer was often still enough to win. Our last round was Mana Echoes, where every unit of colored mana came with an additional colorless one. I used an infinite mana combo with Initiates of the Ebon Hand to cast Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, annihilating the competition and giving me yet another win. Even though I did surprisingly well last season, I don't expect lightning to strike twice. The title is up for grabs; will you take it? Bans: Black Lotus, Brain Maggot, Chronomaton, City of Traitors, Hangarback Walker, Mayor of Avabruck, Mesmeric Fiend Unbans: Mishra's Factory We've got a long list of new bans this season, with only one unban. I'm looking forward to seeing what people will build with all these constraints. Good luck! New Round: Vanilla Begins Saturday, November 5th Ends Wednesday, November 9th

September 30th? October 5th? Is time travel afoot here? Actually, that reminds me...*disappears off to the YMtC forums* |

Cgalcic, you definitely shortchanged yourself. You stomp all over Zlen. Lodestone Golem doesn't slow Eater of Days because it's an artifact too. Even when Zlen goes first, your Eater lands after you've only been hit once - then it's not even a combat race, all you'd have to do is wait and let Mana Crypt kill him! Broodmother's a bit of a race. But by my math, even on the play, you only get POSV down to 2, and then there are enough dragons opposing to be able to kill an attacking Eater and leave at least one survivor. So that score seems to be right. It felt like you might just outrace on the play, but you miss it by that much. |

How dare you question my results Dangit Mark and Zlen...you were supposed to play anti-land! Edit: Also, Jim, I had you as 3 vs G_spy. Pretty sure you get them to three before Elspeth lands when you are on the play and then you can drain them the last three before they can kill you. It's close though. |

I think I can only get Golgari_Spy down to 4 before Elspeth comes down, which gives her enough time to ult. Here's how I have it.

Questioning results - it's what's for dinner! I don't think Jim gets GS to 3 before Elspeth; just 4 (he can't play both Apprentice and Guide on T1, and Guide is clearly the right aggro first play, so Apprentice can't start hurting til T3). A very important difference! In a vacuum, GS's elspeth lands on GS'es T6. Store1 lands on T1 and gets counters on 2, 3, 4, 5 Store2 lands on T2 and gets counters on 3, 4, 5 The first turn GS has 6 mana available is T6. Jim on play: T1 Goblin Guide, swing (20-18) T2 Stormscape, swing with GG alone because apprentice is still sick (20-16) T3 Swing all (20-13) T4 Swing all (20-10) T5 Swing all (20-7) T6 Swing all (20-4) (and now lands elspeth and her first soldiers) T7 Swing with GG; stormscape ping T8 Stormscape ping T9 stormscape ping T10 Stormscape ping for win, if CJ ever gets a T10. Elspeth's side clearly can't let GG through or death comes two turns sooner, but it could chump the GG or kill it. If chump: T7: Make more dudes (loy 6, 5 dudes, 2 swing) T8: Make more dudes (loy 7, 7 dudes, 5 swing) T9: Ult Elspeth (swing for 21 flying, and game over) Since swinging with GG is clearly a losing proposition, CJ might rather keep GG at home as a blocker. But that's no help, as Elspeth's army of 9 becomes a flying power of 27 on T9. Yeh, I think CJ *does* take the 0, losing the close race on the play. Dammit ninjad. That's what happens when I spend over 15 minutes on a post. |

Someone marked a note of "Goblin Guide + Mana Crypt outraces Lodestone Golem." on 2vs7. They way I thought it, Goblin Guide doesn't matter at all. With Lodestone on the play it lands and CJ never casts a spell. With CJ on the play he drops Stormscape on T1, and either wins with 20 swings or drains from that, or Zlen plays the Golem then CJ proceeds to tap down the Golem every turn as the Crypt delivers the kill. Though I guess if one was inclined to play the Goblin Guide it would outrace, too. |

The poll for this season's first alternate format is now up! I decided to bring back an old classic and a new twist on Chimney Sweeps from Season 2. |

That's a meme too, although admittedly (and perhaps strangely) not as annoying. Yet. |
