Any idea what he's referring to?

Probably nothing specific. I bet he just got a glut of questions about future plans this week. A lot of people have been wanting to know about the Comic Con promotional cards and we still have both Commander and Conspiracy coming up that people are getting impatient with.

EDIT: Failing that, there was some big thing on Tumblr in the last few weeks about the Restricted List due to speculation issues. I can believe that may be what he is referring to.

Yeah, likely the recent buyout activity - Craig Berry's videos going viral, and the seeming interest by Martin Shkreli to do something similar - has led to a lot of speculation that this will be the impetus behind a real re-evaluation of the reserved list. And, of course, he can't talk about that.

Reserved List? Gross.

20-year-old cards going from $90 to $250 overnight? Gross.

I really really want Wizards' response to be ending all support for Vintage and Legacy, just for the car-crash comedy value.

I've long since stopped caring about the Reserved List. If I really want to play with those cards in Casual play, nobody in my area is going to get too bent out of shape if I proxy up a card here or there that I don't own. There aren't enough Legacy and Vintage events in my area for me to care even a little bit that the prices are getting so out of hand that other people can't get into those dying formats anymore.

If theyre talking about the reserved list, wouldnt the only thing they would be talking about is abolishing or weakening it? I cant imagine them adding more cards right? If its the former why would you want to buy old expensive cards with a chance of reprint?

I got a feeling that good players won't care if you proxy up your power cards. They'll enjoy the challenge. Yellow-bellied mouthbreathers will kvetch to the high heavens. Shots fired at you yellow-bellied rotters.

I would love it if they abolished the reserved list just to ruin Schkreli's investment.

"investment"

Pretty sure they will be forced to removed the reserved list if he buys enough old cwrds to double or triple the prices. If they care about legacy and vintage anyway.

See that's the problem. Wizards doesn't care about those formats, at least not in the traditional sense. All of their development resources go to supporting Limited (Draft and Sealed), Standard, and Modern. These are formats that they can curate and control much more easily, being able to reprint any cards necessary. Vintage and Legacy are ancient formats that may as well have "ultra expensive casual" stamped on them. They are only formats that get some 3rd party support through SCG and local game stores because they are made up of expensive cards that turn a profit for those venues.

Post subject:  Re: Mark Rosewater being spooky

Yeah then who cares? Those who already own such cards wins, and theres not enough people trying to get into those formats because wizards doesnt even support it anymore. Just print functional reprints already and end it.

At this point it's mostly about company integrity. They promised that they wouldn't reprint those cards so they won't. Collectors will collect and players will play (sometimes with proxies). Sure there will be some tournament hickups in sanctioning events because of proxies, but LGS locations that run sanctioned Vintage/Legacy events know their audience and know that they have enough players with enough cards to do it legally. Other areas just won't have sanctioned Vintage/Legacy events and just have those same (if unsanctioned) tournaments, or just won't hold them at all in favor of Modern, Standard, or Limited because that's what their player base has access to.

I guess my question is; for those of you that don't have enough Vintage or Legacy staples and can't realistically afford to blow that kind of money on cardboard, what's stopping you from proxying up the missing cards to enjoy playing your various deck ideas with your friends in a fun and casual (or even competitively casual) manner? Like, are the people you play with just dicks, or are you for some reason chasing a dream of playing with thousands of dollars worth of cards in a high profile sanctioned event? And if it's more that second one, why can't you get your fix in high profile events that are more likely to be sanctioned like Modern or Standard? Is it just because the plays aren't always as flashy?

I wonder. Personally i have never asked if anyone wanted to proxy up vintage decks. I have played with people that are simply against proxies of any kind, even terrible cards simply put of the principle so such people certainly exist. I think a lot of people are simply scared. Ancient formats have a lot of crazy cards.

Post subject:  Re: Mark Rosewater being spooky

I understand that mentality. I too used to give the side-eye to people with decks full of proxy cards, but as I've grow up through the game, amassed such a large collection of cards, and the prices of the older ones that I'm missing have taken to new astronomical heights, I've outgrown that way of thought.

As an example, I had a fun deck idea that required a play-set of Invoke Prejudice. At Star City's bargain basement price of $99 a pop, there was no way I was going to blow $400 on four cards for a deck idea. Especially since the deck is not terribly competitive, there are almost no sanctioned Legacy events in my area, and I don't think I've ever physically seen more than one Invoke Prejudice in a store at a time so trading for them in a hurry was probably out of the question as well. Fortunately, three minutes, a printer, and some scissors later I was able to slide four printed proxies into my deck and play a few casual rounds with my friends. We all had fun, nobody got pissy, and after I had my fun I took the deck apart and moved on without having burned $400 to have some old cards sit in my binders.

From Wizards perspective, everything was a win. They weren't going to make any money if I bought the cards or proxied them. Everyone played Magic and had fun. No sanctioned tournament rules were broken.

How about stores running "rent-a-deck" deals? Or is there too much card value depreciation due to wear and tear of playing 15 rounds?

In the same vein, are you allowed to run a proxy (a real card, like an overwritten basic Island) at sanctioned tournaments, if you have the real thing in your deck box?
