I learned that when you use your position in the community to try and enact change on MODO, WotC will show you your place by removing all events other than 8-4's.

He's talking about Brian Kibler I think. He was going to win a big tournament in magic online, then it crashed. He made a big post and that's probably why daily magic posted the article it did today. He just did what the Great Forum Migration could not and got an official response from Wizards. Not quite the response he probably wanted though.

The tournament was the MOCS, Magic Online Championship Series, and is the biggest MODO tournament. First place gets a place at the WMC

Then, the day after, a PTQ crashed too.

Is it bad that I enjoy Hearthstone more than MODO, because I don't want to stab myself trying to play it?

Damned WOTC, driving us into the waiting arms of casual gaming.

The only thing you will find when you jump into those arms is a knife in your back

Still, at least knives have good interfaces and few crashes, can be used on a wide variety of platforms, and don't release a crappy "knife beta".

I seriously don't get why WOTC hasn't invested more into MTGO. It's literally printing free money. Every time an 8-4 fires, it's 16 tix and 12 packs disappearing, which is like $50 going straight into WOTC's pockets. You'd think that they would at least make a more understandable interface that doesn't look like it was made in the 90s, and at best make it available on steam, allow players to buy/sell cards to each other more easily, and make it available on touchpads and macs.

You probably underestimate the capital and time invested to totally rewrite MODO. I can sort of tell by the dated/vintage look of it that the code base must be a total mess.

It probably 50x the effort than updating the forums, and look how badly they **** that up.

That's different. The forums don't give them free money.

If a sports event is canceled half way but someone is obviosuly going to win what do they do? I honestly don't know but I feel like they would continue it from where it left off.

That only happens in the event of a catastrophic disaster. And yeah, usually the reschedule and start from where it was stopped.

I learned that in the current Standard meta, "dies to removal" is a valid argument because holy s&%$ there's a lot of cheap removal right now.

EDIT: sorry, I didn't realized I was still in the Limited forum.

Well... I am not business expert but it's a tradeoff.

Crappy MODO ALREADY grosses them $X/month (maybe $100,000?), and costs some amount below that to maintain. Let's say 2-3 FTE which is about $500K/year. The hardware is probably 1/10th that, so forget it.
Replacing it with new software is going to cost at least several million over 2-3 years - maybe as much as $50M total (online videogames are expensive to develop) , and it has to be paid upfront. And you still have the same maintenance costs. So, in order for this to be a good investment for WOTC/Hasbro they have to be sure to recoup their investment by increasing the number of subscribers/players that pay.

You have to also consider the backlash if they "upgrade" and it bombs. (i.e, forums, obamacare).

Free versions or competitors probably cannot compete for serious MTGO players because their won't be the gambling/payoff aspect of it. And MTG is still the biggest and best CCG game around, and the online game synergies with the paper one.

On the postitive side, eventually technology will badly outstrip their software and they will have to replace it. They probably are already working on a new version, but maybe it's only a couple engineers with prototypes.

Like anything, the only way to get an inferior product changed is for a ton of people to stop buying it, or for a viable alternative to threaten stealing sales. Good luck with either of those things happening with MTGO.

Did anyone else see the funny LSV Twitter drama about this yesterday?

I've successfully avoided MTGO since I got back into the game in February and I'm going to stay away from it because I've got a serious enough addiction to cardboard.

Hey Cato, I'm going to move this thread to General seeing the topic has been less about limited and just about Magic related things in general.

If you want to create another thread about what people have learned in limited, perhaps make the topic more specific.

Except in baseball where if a game gets rained out after the 5th inning whoever is winning wins the game by the umpire's discretion.
