Hope to pick up ASoIaF up before season four of GoT starts though, and I've got Oryx and Crake/The Year of the Flood sitting in a corner, crying and waiting for me to read them.

Currently Reading: City of Bones (Mortal Instruments) by Cassandra Clare, a co-worker lent it to me to read. Favorite Book: Redwall by Brian Jacques, my childhood will always hold this in a special place. Favorite Series: The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher, because Harry is that awesome. Currently Reading: Guns, Germs and Steel by Jared Diamond Favorite book: Something by Neil Stephenson, probably Snow Crash or Anathem Favorite series: Hard to tell, since I don't read that much series. Probably Harry Potter or Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels. |

I hope GRRM learned his lesson about trying to give people a ballpark idea of how close to completion and publication the next book is. His overly-optimistic comments over the course of A Dance With Dragon's writing made the wait all the worse when the delays hit.

I've started to read it a few times... but probably just need to snag for my kindle for reading in the airport or when i have a moment. Currently reading: Re-reading Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane. His writing is just... beautiful. The first chapter of this book is some of the best melancholic prose I can remember. Favorite book: Ahahaha, yeah right. Favorite series: Nng. So much of what I read is part of a series, and it's already so hard to choose. Discworld has some incredible books (  Night Watch) but a few duds as well; Stross's Laundry Files is hilarious if you fit into the target niche; Butcher's Codex Alera is pretty fine. The Dark Tower also gets a mention, for being weird and meta and fun. I guess my current top-of-the-list is Jasper Fforde's "Thursday Next" series, a strange and hilarious series set in an alternate 1980s where literary gangs roam the streets and cheese is taxed at 800%.

FINALLY finished reading The Magicians by Lev Grossman. I thought his writing was very subpar the whole way through, and while I greatly enjoyed parts of the story, I didn't feel like it was all that well plotted, and the payoff was grossly underwhelming. (Which is a theme in the book, but it still didn't work out well.) It's often hard to decide on what next to read when you have an entire book store staring you in the face every day, but I decided to snag a copy of Ender's Game so I can go into the movie having read it. |

Currently Reading: Diaspora by Greg Egan. Any other Greg Egan fans? It's one of my favourite books, although I recognize that literarily it has many weaknesses. I've got a The Dresden Files book (the fourth, I think) on the back-burner, ready to switch to it when I'm in the mood for some less heavy reading. (I often have two books on the go, for when my interest in one of them wanes.) |

I'm currently reading... I'm going to take advantage of a loophole here. Currently reading:The Warlord's Legacy (by Ari Marmell); I'm somewhere in the middle of the Icewind Dale Trilogy (by R.A. Salvatore); Transmetropolitan (by Warren Ellis (writing) and Darick Robertson (penciling) ( Homestuck (by Andrew Hussie); Mort Takes a Holiday (by AnonymousMaterials); A Still More Glorious Dawn Awaits (by CDRW); and if I really want to get technical, Radiographic Positioning And Related Anatomy (by a bunch of official people) and Radiation Protection In Medical Radiography (by another bunch of official people). Favorite Book: It changes from time to time; currently it's Past Sins by Pen Stroke, but it's only taken the title for two and 1/2 reasons: 1. I can't quite remember how good the Conqueror's Shadow by Ari Marmell was anymore (it's been probably two years since I read it); and 2. It's the most recent "really good book" I've had the time to read, otherwise it would be Hammered by Kevin Hearne. The 1/2 is because there is roughly a 100% chance that The Warlord's Legacy will take the title once I'm done with it. Favorite Series: Um...  Let's have fun with this one, too.Widdershins novels & Conqueror's Shadow lines by Ari Marmell* The Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne Discworld by Terry Pratchett the In the Family trilogy by Pen Stroke (really Winter Bells was better than Past Sins) some of the Drizzt Do'Urden series by R.A. Salvatore (I've only read a small portion of it, but I'm particularly fond of The Dark Elf trilogy and The Sellswords trilogy) Elfquest by Richard & Windy Pini (very difficult to find; I "inherited" books 1, 4, 5, 6, and 7 from my older brother (ones that were reprints from 1987) EDIT: How could I forget the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams? Or the Ravnica cycle of M:tG (all three written by Cory J. Herndon)? *Basically anything I've read by Ari Marmell has instantly sold me on whatever the series. I'm sure there's more I've forgotten. I feel like I've been missing out because I've never really read a Neil Gaiman book, though I keep hearing about how nice his writing is. I started one of his once (I can't remember which one it was) but the plot didn't really hook me and I lost steam. You just reminded me of this work, about which I recently heard good things about from some other critics I find credible. I think they emphasized very interesting use of metaphor/dual meaning, and that it wasn't too long, which could be useful when trying to develop an appreciation for a new author. I need to remember to give this a shot. |
