Anyone else read this series?

Super sad it's all over. Super sad this will never be a movie.

To give you an idea of the scope:

The unabridged lord of the rings audiobook is 54 hours long. The movies are a little over ten hours.

The wheel of time audio series is over 461 hours long. And even if you did one movie per book, the average audiobook length is over 30 hours, or one and a half returns of the king. And there are fifteen of them. The wheel of time movie would be about ninety hours long if you wanted to get anywhere near as true to the original work as the lord of the rings movies did.

I don't really see a movie coming out any time soon.

Ninety hours long!!!

Post subject:  Re: The Wheel of Time

Did you read the series, or just google it?

90 hours long = 180 hours of theatrical content.

180 hours of theatrical content = 12 seasons!

Perfect!

What? What do you mean 90 hours long = 180 hours of theatrical content?

Obviously a scene where in the novel something goes along the lines of "and Harry weaved between Dementors and humped Ron into submission" would take a lot longer to convey visually.

Right, so I was translating the book length into runtime based on the lord of the rings audiobook and the movies' runtime.

Rereading your post it was pretty obvious what you meant.

I really don't know what I was thinking.

It's weird that I would ever find a sense of kinship with you. Let's not do this ever again.

So I am about eight hours into the first audio book, (i.e. they have just entered a town under false names and the main character meets an empath in the stables) and I don't really have much attachment to anyone. The apprentice smith guy is alright, but the main character is distrusting the person who saved everyone's lives and village, and not telling that person about omenous dreams, despite a clear invitation to do so. I get that the main character is a backwoods farmer, and has the same distrust for magic people as a germanic child should have for the fae folk, but it's a labor to listen to.

However, having read Homestuck, I recognize that a slow beginning can turn into an epic progression. I guess what I'm asking is, how does it get better in the first book? I think I can continue if there is something seriously more interesting than finding out that the main character is the dragon reborn and also royalty or some such.

Also, the villian so far is my favorite character. It is so hard when you are supported by stupid evil and have to contend with stupid good.

The first book starts slow and gets better.

Someone should make a mafia game of wheel of time

Circa whatever book with the dark friend assassinating people
Actually I think that happened a couple times but was thinking Aiel.

I suspect as much, but what denotes better for you, might be worse for me. I would honestly welcome spoilers if they indicated that this book is going to do something more interesting than play out most of the cliches that go with "Ordinary Villager turns into Chosen Warrior of the Light" while still holding the idiot ball.

There is a ton of character development. Maybe I was just a newb or naive but I didn't expect a lot of it. There is also a ton of characters and plot lines and parallel story lines that each hold their own. They get way more complex later on but yeah. You learn to love the characters.
