So maybe I should just sleep longer than 8 hours then. Cause I guarantee I won't be quitting the ganj. Edit: Maybe taking vitamin supplements? |

I just went through about 9 months of various tests with my doctor for the same problem. Turns out I have chronic fatigue syndrome. Fun times. The short answer is to talk to your doctor, because there are a ton of things that "fatigue" is a symptom of. The things I was test for include, but aren't limited to: sleep apnea, diabetes (checked twice), liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disease, blood cancers, lupus, lyme disease, and rheumatoid arthritis. |

Maybe you aren't going into REM sleep. |

I try to avoid smoking too late at night because of that exact effect. I feel like I got run over by a truck every morning. If its not that, regular exercise, plenty of a water and a good diet should help considerably with sleep as well like 90% of small problems people have throughout the day. |

I think poor diet could be part of the problem, either that or possibly vitamin deficiency. I've been known to be B12 deficient in the past. Diabetes and kidney disease run in my family. :I |

Diabetes runs in mine, too. That's why the doc checked it twice. For real easy starters, don't have any caffeine at least 8 hours before going to bed, and try to add a little bit more fruit and veggies into your diet. Once you have those down, for 1 week (even weekends) go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time. You could just have too much caffeine in your system, vitamin deficiency (as you said), or could have your circadian rhythm screwed up by sleeping / waking at different times. |

I drink a lot of caffeine through the mornings and afternoon, but I stop like 3-4 hours before bed. Didn't think even that long it could affect my sleep. |

If you are worried, see a doctor. A forum like this is no place to look for medical advice. |

Yxoque wrote: If you are worried, see a doctor. A forum like this is no place to look for medical advice. This, of course, is the best advice. Caffeine can indeed stay in your system up to 8 hours or so. Even if you don't feel the effects of it, your brain can and it'll stay awake. |

GobO_IronHoof wrote: Maybe you aren't going into REM sleep. This was my first guess when seeing the thread title. And theres also such thing as too much sleep, or not sleeping at the right time. If you sleep from 4am to 12noon, theres a chance you'll still feel not on par. But if I had to hazards a guess, and dont take any of the following as a an insult or anything, but I'd say review your diet, your activity levels, and alter the quantity of or at least the time period of smoking weed. Poor diet, accompanied with sitting around and not being active (I believe you mentioned pain in another thread... hence one of the benefits of weed) plust smoking or drinking caffine before bed can all result in poor sleep, and poorer health overall. Cut back on soda if you drink it, get to sleep at a decent time, and even if you're on a computer all day either at work or home, get up and move around once in a while: it helps with the body and the eyes.... even if its just like 10 push-ups on the hour or walking around to get the blood flowing. When all else fails, see a doc. |

OakenHeart wrote: plust smoking or drinking caffine before bed can all result in poor sleep plust is out to get us! In all seriousness, I've had a crazy loopy schedule the last year or so, with flying out of town once or twice a month for work, driving/flying another once or twice a month to see my sweetie, and working four late night eleven hour shifts a week has really messed up my schedule. I also drink probably 4-5 sodas/coffees/teas in a day as well. I usually get between 3 and 9 hours of sleep a night, with 6 being average. However, I run for 30-60 minutes a day every day, drink a gallon of water a day (fill it up when I wake up,) and at least one meal a day is partially if not completely from my balcony garden. I usually get tired around 3am, which sucks cuz I still have to be up for a few more hours at that point, but when I wake up every morning I feel awesome. Regular exercise, even just a few minutes of walking/stretching every day, plus lots of water makes a huge difference. Eating right helps too, of course. But if you are super lazy and only do one thing, make it be drinking a lot of water. You don't even have to cut back on drinking drinks that are crap for you to do this. Drinking enough water is the single easiest thing you can do to improve your health. Also yeah, go see a doctor. |

Every hour and a half or so your REM cycle ends and you shift around in your sleep. My alarm uses the accelerometer in my phone to see when I'm tossing and turning and starts gently building the alarm volume within the hour and a half time slot I designate. Super sweet. |

REM Cycles
Spoiler
You'll notice, like the picture says, that Rapid Eye Movement Cycles get longer and closer together the longer you sleep. This is why timing when you get up can be tricky, as you can tell by the chart, shortly after the 7 hour mark, you're in REM until the 8 hour mark. If you lay down in bed at exactly 10pm and have your alarm set for 6am, you can see that unless you fall asleep immediately, you'll interrupt an REM cycle. Also, as yu can see by the front of the chart, this is why power naps refresh you so much, you can go all the way into deep sleep with a 45 minute nap and then wake up. Or get multiple sets of deep sleep with a 2 hour nap. |

You sit the phone on your bed and it senses the mattress moving. Forget the name of it, though. Along the lines of REM sleep... do you snore, Butt? If so, that could point to sleep apnea (which is completely treatable). But like I said earlier, that's why you need to go to a doctor - there are so many things that have "fatigue" as a symtom. |

Sleep apnea is no fun for sure. I've known several people at work that have had it. Nothing says fun like stopping breathing in your sleep... or being hooked to a machine so that you can sleep. Gah. |
