So you're claiming that one cannot master the basics of something? Wow, I guess since I am not capable of doing differential calculus in my head I am incapable of basic addition. Good to know, thank you for enlightening me.

No, although, strictly, nothing in that post was in violation of the CoC. I just think someone with a pattern of behavior like his has no business acting like that, and, should they do so, they deserve all the mockery I can deliver and more.

you can master something basic like adding and subtracting

that is still a binary quantity

that is not the same as this magical quality you call "basic mastery"

which is ironic because you are the master of the english language

and shouldn't need to be corrected like this

Have you heard of speed/traditional metal band Tales of Medusa?
They've got some good instrumentals, but their singer can't sing. Or, more accurately, he can sing but in most of the songs I've heard he refuses to make anything more than glorified squeals and other miscellaneous unpleasant sounds. I'm just sayin', when I hear a song and think "Wow, this would be made much better if that guy would shut up," that's not a good thing.

Also, they sound vaguely reminiscent of Symphony X, so that's kinda a turn-off.

He may not be a classically trained singer but he CAN sing. His voice has a workmanlike, blue collar, honest quality that is pretty refreshing, and fits with this rawer brand of traditional metal. Next youll be telling me Quorthon from Bathory can't sing.

No, he can make noise. He can't sing. Rob Halford can sing. Tony Kakko can sing. Marco Hietala can sing. What the singer for MT did was noise. Which really is a shame, their instrumental work was quite nice.

Music does have objective qualities. There is well and poorly produced and written music. Taste does factor into music but not all music is equal.

Yes. That's absolutely correct.

Bruce Dickinson is a reasonably good singer, but has a highly mediocre voice, to put it gently. This is objectively true. Freddy Mercury was a fantastic singer with an amazing voice. This is objectively true. Different genres have different standards. Regardless of one's opinions on rap, there are artists who are objectively good rappers by the standards of the genre, and Vanilla Ice is an objectively bad rapper. I, personally, actually dislike the Beetles, but they are an objectively good band. They're very skilled, and can write very good songs. My personal dislike of their style of music doesn't change this, and any claim that they aren't is, quite frankly, deluded.

No, you're wrong; on multiple counts, and here's why.

A) The singer for Tales of Medusa has a great voice, even if he's not necessarily on-key most of the time. It fits with the raw, unpolished, do-it-yourself ethic to the music, which brings me to another point, that music is about more than just technical skill. It's about ambiance, atmosphere, and the ethos behind the music. You sound like every other member of the 30s-40s generation that talked about "that wretched devil noise" when metal was first taking off in the early 70s.

B) Rob Halford is about as good of a singer as Tales of Medusa's singer. If you hate one you have to hate the other, since they are on-par, vocally skilled. And I know what I am talking about. I have heard bootlegs from gigs he did that you probably have never heard. Gigs that weren't even with Judas Priest.

C) As I said... next you'll be telling me Quorthon from Bathory is not a good singer, simply because he cannot hit 100% of every note ever. Which if you did, would be wrong.

No, I'm right on every account.

So you're saying he can't sing?

...No. Just, no. This isn't punk or grunge. Not being able to sing or tune one's instruments is not a merit. This is further cemented by the fact that the rest of the band is perfectly capable. And I fail to see what DIY has to do with the band.
Quote:

Yes. There's talent and performance. Two other things completely lacking in the singer.
Quote:

No, those have nothing to do with the music whatsoever. You want atmosphere? Go to a concert. Music stands on its own merits.

Now this, kids, is an actual, legitimate example of argumentum ad hominem. Here we have a personal attack in place of anything resembling a reasoned argument.

No. Rob Halford has an amazing voice and can sing.

No they aren't. And, even if I were to accept that they were equally skilled, something so laughably false that even seriously addressing it is charity, then you'd still be wrong because Rob Halford has talent. He has range, awareness of his range, and a highly pleasant voice.

Further, even if we were to accept that the singer from MT had talent and a decent voice as well as skill, no, I wouldn't have to. I like Judas Priest. I dislike MT. I also dislike the Beetles and like some of ACDC. I am, however, completely aware of the quality of both of them.
Quote:
And I know what I am talking about. I have heard bootlegs from gigs he did that you probably have never heard. Gigs that weren't even with Judas Priest.
So now you're claiming that because you can pirate music you are suddenly the absolute authority on all things musical?

No, I'd say he just can't figure out how to actually sing, judging from that painful-sounding rasping noise in place of singing, although that could merely be a terrible voice rather than a lack of skill. It's hard to tell when the instrumentalists forget they're actually working as a group.

But, hey, you can throw out all the red herrings you want.

In order to be right you have to actually make valid points. Everyone here is telling you you're wrong. That usually should say something.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

I didn't say that. I said one does not have to hit every note ever to be able to sing.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

In this specific branch of traditional metal, the raw unpolished quality is what contributes to their sound. The unfinished sounding mixjob, the singer, the somewhat sloppy performance, all contributes to this.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

Music is more than just performance and delivery.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

No, actually. If you want technical skill, performance, and whatnot, listen to Brain Drill. They can sweep like ****, everything is crystal-clear, on-time, on-note perfect, but it's totally sterile and unlistenable. I, on the other hand, enjoy music that has an atmosphere you can lose yourself in, without even having to go to a gig. Music where you can listen to it laying on the ground on a starry night, and just immerse yourself into another entire universe. Music with character.

In short: You're wrong, and have a fundamental misunderstanding of music.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:
Now this, kids, is an actual, legitimate example of argumentum ad hominem. Here we have a personal attack in place of anything resembling a reasoned argument.

No, it's the truth. You sound like an old man when you talk about "oh this guy's just noise, yada yada". Basically, your opinion is not to be taken seriously by anyone ever.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:
No. Rob Halford has an amazing voice and can sing.

Rob Halford is nails on a chalkboard. Good at what he does, but what he does is nails on a chalkboard.

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

Wrong.

This isn't even a point, its basically just "I'm right and you're wrong".

Cyclone_Joker wrote:

It's not pirating if it's perfectly legal-to-acquire music. Audience-recorded concerts, that showcase a vocalist's true voice, without studio magic.
