Tony - no shot at those numbers. Sorry. ;) Well, OK. I'm willing to listen to a case to be made for 5 folders. It's the 5K that you're not gettin'.

Is there any reason why not? The folder isn't as important as the folder space. I've been on forums with practically limitless space. I mean even WotC has ginormous limits to private messages. I can't imagine additional PM space takes up that much resources.

There's no reason it shouldn't be 25K+ and 5k was me trying to significantly undershoot what should be expected.

I don't think likening it to WotC's system now - or even the prior incarnation - is the right comparison. The better comparison is back in their vB days. And as I recall, that was a limit of 100 total messages. (mods and GMs got more; I don't know what mods got, but GMs were raised to 250.)

As best as I can tell, phpBB doesn't have an overall limit; instead it limits the number of user-created folders and the number of messages per folder. And actually, my previous number is probably low because I didn't include your inbox in that. So when I said you could have 800 messages, it would look like you could have 1000.

I would need to see the database table structure for private messages, but there actually could be an argument made for a space concern depending on how the database stores the actual message. There are a couple ways to do it, and some are more efficient (from a storage perspective) than others.

Other than WotC (which I addressed above), who else?

And a practical question that I don't think was actually answered: do you really believe you'll need to store more than 1000 messages? And a new question: are you aware the software has options to allow you to download them into a file? There's even a nifty little program that'll parse the downloaded file for you and display them as actual messages rather than just a wall of text. Lemme add finding that to my to-do list.

Uh what? We're comparing 2013 to 2013. Not 2013 to a system over half a decade old.

Then if it doesn't have a limit, why not just increase it?

Various sports forums, and source.

Yes I do. I have several hundred between various conversations already, and thats not including the automatically deleted messages that happened before I realized it was automatically deleting old messages and I added folders for storage.

I tried that. In all three formats. All of them result in a file conversation that is unreadable and unfollowable.

quick follow up: were you just reading the downloaded file directly, or feeding that file into one of the "reader" programs that exist?

What programs?

And why exactly do I have to download stuff to archive things that could just as easily just be stored here without doing anything...?

I had mentioned previously that viewer programs existed. Just wondering if you were using one of them or reading the file. I'm not at all saying you need to do so - just gathering info.

Here's the rub on private messages:

Between my two accounts, I've sent about 1500 private messages on this site, and received about the same number. I'm a busy bee. Most users probably aren't as busy as I am, let's just say that everyone sends an average of 40 messages in the same time span. In a year, that's 1000 messages per user. At a thousand users, that's a million messages a year. There is no hard cap on the amount of data we can store, but there's also no reason to be greedy with our data storage. We also haven't heavily gotten into storing data as far as user content, like art, blogs, videos, and such are concerned. All of that is going to live on this site, at least eventually.

So, short answer, while the amount of data we can store is potentially limitless, there's no reason to save data that doesn't really warrant it, especially since you can save it if you want.

As for post numbers for reference, I mean like

etc... so people can say go look at post number 5, or if you're simply scrolling through you have something to go by.
Using links as someone pointed out covers a majority of issues (again most of them being reference), but there are still many that are simply leisurely scrolling through and you wanted to find an older post or something.

Needless to say, thanks again for the information. And effort and work :)

I'm in Chrome, and when someone autocards a plane, such as Aretopolis, I only get 2/3 of the card in the mouseover image.

Same thing in Firefox, using the example link.

I'm guessing there is a width limit to autocard thumbnails...

Good call, Aaaargh. The javascript plugin we're using for the popups was limiting its maximum width to 280px.

It should be fixed now, or as soon as phpbb refreshes its cache.

I don't know if this is possible, it would be more decoration than anything anyways...

Can posts be set up to post when they were started, or at least have the option to?
I'm thinking, in the YMTC community, and big thing was 24 hour contests, or XX hour contests. It would be cool to have something, at least in those cases, that could say "Post was started 30 hours ago", or something along those lines. It'd help some people see whether or not they have adequate time to still participate or not. Again, very very minor, but something that could be cool.
Thanks!

Not sure what you mean. The date and time of the post is in the top right corner.

I think the difference is that on Wizards it was described as "made x hours ago" up until a certain point, whereas here it posts the time and only the time, which means people have to do the math themselves. Which... doesn't seem like a big deal, but I think that's what Altimis is talking about.

Yes, that's what I'm talking about.

Also, any chance on getting a 'Like' button?
