I suggested this on the planning forum, but have a general discussion for "serious" topics like how free healthcare is the devils work (it was called General Discussion on wooden marble 1 I think) and then the current off-topic room for less serious stuff like the music thread and more laid back discussion is good

Speaking as just a poster, rather than as a lead mod...

What about, for starters, if we define some rules for starting a "debate" thread, meant to capture the serious topics. We require the opening post to have more than, "Obamacare. Discuss." Instead, it should lay out facts and offer an opinion. And replies to the thread would also need to be more than, "That idea sucks." Whether it was refuting a fact with a different source, discussing why the opinion drawn from the facts is missing something, etc. We'd also have a (self-imposed) tag* that went in the title so everybody knew it was a "serious debate" thread.

It would be a lot of moderation work, I suspect, in order to get an orderly debate. And I would also expect with that heavier moderation work would come more posts being removed - not just the CoC stuff, but replies that have just a smilie, "+1," etc.

Then, if those threads do end up working out and we have strong, well-mannered, well-reasoned debates and we end up with enough of them to matter, we would create a forum for them.

Just spitballing an idea that may not be workable...

(* Note to self: remember to search for a "tag" mod...)

Yeah, that's probably fair...

can we get a way to collapse or reorganize sections of the forums we dont read

does phpbb3 have the technology

Not built in, but I can look for a mod for it. I would wager collapsing is more likely than rearranging, but I'll look for both.

I found a mod for collapsing categories. Testing it now.

if it makes you feel any better its actually only been 2 weeks and I mistyped

but if we are going to get a mod to collapse forums then I don't care because I won't have to see it anyways

so there is still hope I guess

OK, mod is installed. Each category should have a tiny "[-]" on the right edge of its row. Click it to collapse that category. It persists across logouts.

As seems to be typical for phpbb mods the visual presentation is awful, so that may be changing slightly later.
